Have you ever been around
an injured athlete? If so, you have seen glimpses of depression. An injured
athlete is a wounded soul. Injuries are part of the athlete’s journey; there’s
no escaping them. An injured athlete needs love, patience, and kindness to
recover fully and at a steady pace. Family, loved ones, and a supportive
community will help an injured athlete heal and overcome glimpses of
depression.
Injured Athlete
depression manifests itself in many forms.
Signs
of a depressed athlete:
Skipping practice
Not showering for days
Rage, breaking equipment
Lethargic
Lack of
appetite/overeating/excess alcohol and drug use
Unable to support
teammates or attend athletic events
Crying in frustration
Isolation, no desire to
engage with anyone
Physiological symptoms:
hair loss, acne, black bags under eyes, weight gain/loss
An abrupt change in
lifestyle
Part of an athlete’s
survival life-kit is working out; for many, an active lifestyle is a form of
therapy. When injuries prevail, athletes feel a sense of loss, which manifests
as depression. Recognizing depression as an athlete is part of the injury
healing process.
* Recognize that your injuries and unattainability to thrive in
your sport can lead to depression.* Recognize that injuries and depression can both heal.* Be kind to your athlete’s soul.* Rally up your athlete troops, accept you are angry, sad,
depressed, and begin the healing process.* Implement a meditation routine. Meditation will heal you
from inside out, restore your sense of discipline, and provide nurturing
effects.
Self
Judgement
Sometimes when you are
injured, you shy away from your sport or struggle to be around your teammates.
There’s a heaviness in your heart, frustration, anger, and at times even
jealousy. These feelings are all part of your injury healing journey.
Recognizing and embracing your recovery journey as an athletic goal will
benefit you physiologically and emotionally.
A Healing Athlete Mantra
I Am determined.
I Am healing.
I Am safe.
Athlete’s scars are beautiful outward reflections of an athlete’s soul, stamina, and strength. They uniquely form an athlete’s history of adventure, pain, love, and resilience. Athletes’ scars are masterpieces of love. They are an athlete’s love story.
Love, Lupe.
