Life is destructive. Our environment and our internal functions all wear and tear at our body over time. Evolutionarily speaking, natural selection rewards those who can survive such hardship. So why don’t we live forever—why age at all?

There have been numerous attempts to understand how and why we age—as recently as 1990, the biologist Zhores Medvedev tallied more than 300 possible hypotheses. But according to Steven Austad, a biogerontologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, one explanation has risen to the top: “Reproduction is the name of the game. Basically, we age because it’s not in nature’s best interest to perfectly repair our bodies. The main thing is to keep us reproductive as long as possible, and then let our bodies deteriorate.”

“Longevity is one of the most exciting areas of research because it really takes into account every aspect of a human being.”

—Winifred Rossi, National Institute on Aging

The rate of aging in humans and other mammals, Austad says, might be determined by how quickly we have to reproduce before we’re killed off by other factors. In general, the smaller the animal and the more hostile its environment, the shorter it lives. A field mouse, for example, must breed before a hawk snatches it up, and so its organs and immune system don’t need to last 50 years. On the flip side, elephants have few threats, so their bodies can keep going for decades. “In an evolutionary sense,” says Austad, “that is the timekeeper.”

Since 1900, average U.S. life expectancy has risen from 47 to 79. A lot of those gains come from a lower infant-mortality rate: A century ago, 1-in-10 babies born in the U.S. died before age 1, while today that figure is 1-in-170. But longevity gains in later years have also been substantial. This chart shows the expected age of death for those who make it to 65. All four nations shown here have gained about a decade. Women have also outpaced men, a trend Andrew Noymer, a demographer at the University of California at Irvine, ascribes to higher rates of smoking and drinking among males. In the past few decades, men have been closing the gap—meaning more golden years for everyone. —Katie Peek

Women outlive men, and the difference is growing

The average life spans of animals vary wildly from ours, but the mechanisms involved for each appear to be different. “There are multiple roads to longevity,” says Vadim Gladyshev, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School. Identifying strategies that nature uses to alter life span could help scientists figure out how to extend human lives.

There’s no question, of course, that China’s slowdown is both real and important for the global economy. But news events like this year’s stock-market plunge and the yuan’s devaluation versus the dollar reinforce the refrain, among a chorus of China watchers, that the country’s long flirtation with disaster has finally ended, as predicted, in tears. Meanwhile, Chinese officials, worried about political blowback, are said to ignore advice from outside experts on heading off further turmoil and to be paranoid about criticism.

My experience working and living in China for the past three decades suggests that this one-dimensional view is far from reality. Doubts about China’s future regularly ebb and flow. In what follows, I challenge five common assumptions.

    1. China has been faking it

A key tenet of the China-meltdown thesis is that the country has simply not established the basis for a sustainable economy. It is said to lack a competitive, dynamic private-enterprise structure and to have captured most of the value possible from cheap labor and heavy foreign investment already.

Clearly, China lacks some elements of a modern market economy—for example, the legal system falls short of the support for property rights in advanced countries.2 Nonetheless, as China-economy scholar Nicholas Lardy recently pointed out, the private sector is vibrant and tracing an upward trend line. The share of state-owned enterprises in industrial output continues to drop steadily, from 78 percent in 1978 to 26 percent in 2011.3 Private industry far outstrips the value added in the state sector, and lending to private players is growing rapidly.

In fact, much of China’s development model mirrors that of other industrializing and urbanizing economies in Asia and elsewhere. The high savings rate, initial investments in heavy industries and manufacturing, and efforts to guide and stabilize a rapidly industrializing and urbanizing economy, for example, resemble the policies that Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan followed at a similar stage of their development. This investment-led model can lead to its own problems, as Japan’s experience over the past 20 years indicates. Still, a willingness to intervene pragmatically in the market doesn’t imply backwardness or economic management that’s heedless of its impact on neighboring economies and global partners.

Furthermore, China’s reform initiatives4 since 2013 are direct responses to the structural changes in the economy. The new policies aim to spur higher-value exports, to target vibrant emerging markets, to open many sectors for private investors, and to promote consumption-led growth rooted in rising middle-class incomes. Today, consumption continues to go up faster than GDP, and investors have recently piled into sectors from water treatment to e-commerce. These reforms are continuing at the same time China is stepping up its anticorruption drive, and the government hasn’t resorted to massive investment spending (as it did in 2008). That shows just how important the reforms are.

China’s rise won’t just be good for China. The whole balance of power is going to change—and one of the biggest differences is going to be a whole lot more power in Africa.

Not many people realize just how big of a role China is already playing in Africa. China is currently the biggest source of African aid in the world. They’ve invested billions of dollars into the continent, and they’re only planning on spending more. By 2025, they’re projected to have sent Africa $1 trillion.[1]

Western countries have too many moral qualms to invest that much money in a land where so many countries are led by dictators. American money tends to come with demands for political reform or the ends of atrocities—or, depending on who the president is, just gets cut altogether.

But China doesn’t care what Africa does. They’ve happily given money to the worst African tyrants, so long as it’s profitable for them, which it usually is. China says they get a sixfold return on every dollar they invest in Africa.

Africa has already set itself up as one of China’s closest trade partners, and, in exchange, China has lobbied to get more African states in the UN, which means that as China rises, Africa’s going to climb up with it. And since they’ll be allowed to do things their own way, we won’t just see a world under Chinese influence. We’ll start to see a world under African influence, as well.

The United States is going to be hit hard when they lose their place as the world’s superpower. They won’t just quietly slip down into second place—they’re going plummet down into a massive economic depression.

Right now, America is in a great place because its currency is used for almost all international trade. The US dollar is treated like the new gold standard, and that’s keeping the American economy relatively stable.

But China is fully intent on putting an end to America’s cushy position. They have publicly declared their plan to have the Chinese yuan to replace the US dollar as the standard for international trade, and if they pull it off, America’s going to get hit hard.[2]

The second that the dollar loses its spot as the currency of international trade, the United States will plummet into a depression. The US will, almost overnight, lose two percent of its economic output. Import prices will skyrocket, export prices will plummet, and countless people will lose their jobs.

  • The Power of an Entrepreneurial Mindset | How To Think Like a Billionaire | How To Work Like a Billionaire

An entrepreneurial mindset is a set of beliefs, thought processes, and ways of viewing the world that drives entrepreneurial behavior. Typically, entrepreneurs firmly believe it’s possible to improve their life situation and live life on their own terms. They also believe in their ability to learn, grow, adapt, and succeed.

The mindset of successful entrepreneurs is different from the mindset of traditional workers in many ways.

For example, if a traditional worker needs to earn more money, they’ll often brush up their resume and look for a better paid job. However, someone with an entrepreneurial mindset would look for ways to earn money by starting or growing a business.

Here’s the thing: Anyone can develop the mindset of a successful entrepreneur. As the founder of Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you’re right.”

The power of an entrepreneurial mindset is obvious when you think about it. Entrepreneurs succeed like they do because they think, act, and view the world differently from most people.

There are so many reasons why an entrepreneurial mindset matters. For example, developing an entrepreneurial mindset can help to reduce doubt, fear, and anxiety. It can also help to drive action, focus, and growth.

In short, an entrepreneurial mentality is the foundation of business success. Now, let’s explore how entrepreneurs think.

How to Think Like an Entrepreneur: 20 Entrepreneurial Mindset Characteristics

If you want to learn how to build an entrepreneurial mindset, you need to know how successful entrepreneurs think. So, let’s take a closer look at 20 essential entrepreneurial mindset characteristics. Entrepreneurs are:

    1. Independent

This is one of the most important aspects of the entrepreneurial mindset.

Entrepreneurs don’t follow the crowd or look to others to be given instructions. Instead, they listen to their gut and carve their own path.

As Apple’s founder, Steve Jobs, said, “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.”The independent mindset of successful entrepreneurs stems from taking full responsibility.

Entrepreneurs don’t blame others for their life situation – they empower themselves by taking responsibility for improving it.

Failure, success, life circumstances – it doesn’t matter what it is. Even if something isn’t your fault, by taking responsibility for it, you’re empowered to improve it.A key part of the entrepreneurial mindset is abundance.

Entrepreneurs know they can improve a situation, make more money, and create new opportunities.

The sky is always the limit.

As a result, entrepreneurs don’t hoard money or knowledge. They’re open, generous, and understand that “you get what you give.”

The author and entrepreneur Robert Kiyosaki once wrote, “I have never met a rich person who has never lost any money. But I have met a lot of poor people who have never lost a dime.”

Capitalism is an intense system. Lottery winners generally go broke. Countless celebrities – with millions in earnings – often still go bankrupt. Most pro-sports players lose almost everything. At the same time – bizarrely to some – regular people often build multi-million dollar empires. Some even retire in their 30s – or in their 20s, as I did.

The dirty little secret of capitalism is that the system is set up to exponentially reward people who learn strategy. No, I don’t mean it’s set up to necessarily reward the rich and powerful. People with wealth and power tumble all the time. And people who start with nothing are able to build fortunes. Capitalism requires a good strategy. Period.

If you refuse to learn strategy, you’ll be eaten alive. But if you learn the basics of financial strategy, almost nothing can stop you from success. There is no alternative. Strategize or be destroyed. This fundamental truth is largely ignored in high schools, colleges, churches, media, and almost every other institution of society. It’s a tragedy because there are countless hundreds of millions of people who are wasting countless years of their life because they’ve never learned how to navigate the system.

Money Does NOT Take Care of Itself. Success Must Be Built.

Money is a bizarre tool. Unlike how it’s portrayed in movies, TV, and the news, it doesn’t just randomly take care of itself. Money is a harsh mistress. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen someone utterly squander large sums of money – tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars – because they didn’t know how to manage their money.

At the same time, every single millionaire I know was able to build their fortune because they figured out how to build systems and tweak them over time. That’s it. The systems were sometimes very simple, like learning a marketable skill, keeping an extremely tight budget, and squirreling away as much money as possible every month.Everyone begins life with their own unique circumstances, and some people must face handicaps, racism, sexism, homophobia, and all sorts of discrimination.

On the other extreme, some – a tiny minority of people – are born into extreme privilege. Rich parents, easy career options, paid-for college, the “right” skin color or gender – the list goes on and on with how some people are intensely privileged.

But this doesn’t mean what it sounds like. In no way am I suggesting that strategy is important so I can justify some sort of discrimination, structural or otherwise. I strongly support “safety-net capitalism” to maximize opportunity while minimizing disaster for everyone in society who is willing to work hard in a strategic manner.

If anything, the typical person who checks all the right “demographic” boxes still generally squanders their opportunities. Just look at the numbers, and you’ll see that the typical middle-class white male generally has a lackluster net worth. That’s the AVERAGE. The real number for the typical family is much, much less than $171,000 – the average is propped up by the wealthy people on the edge who have learned how to build a family legacy of good strategy.

Elon Musk gave a tour of the Starbase Factory to the Everyday Astronaut. He says that manufacturing systems are much harder than designing rockets. He says the launch tower and launch facilities are far more challenging than the rockets.

    Highlights:

The hard part about the Raptor engine is how do we make it for less than $1000 per ton.
Things that reduce cost per ton to orbit are good. The other key metric is cost per ton to the surface of Mars.
Everything is currently to heavy in the Super Heavy Starship. They can drop the battery mass by a factor of ten in the advanced design.

One of the big things is Elon described his 5 key steps for making things better.

    1. Make your requirements less dumb. Question requirements even from very smart people. Whatever requirement you have must have a person responsible for it. If people are questioning the requirement, then you need to go back to a person who knows why the reason it was needed in the first place.

    2. Try to delete processes and steps. You want to be forced to add back in at least ten percent of the steps you tried to take out. If you are not forced to add back then you are not working hard enough to remove steps.

In school, we get stait jacketed into not being allowed to question the question or questioner and not being allowed to reject questions and steps.

    3. Simplify.

    4. Accelerate cycle time.

    5. Try to automate it.They should be testing version 2 of the Raptor engine in about one month.

Elon hates certain units of measure that make things harder to understand.

He hates newtons of force. He prefers metric tons of thrust.

He wants everyone who is working on his systems to be a chief engineer. Understand the systems at a high level. This way if you are working on details then you will know if you are or can optimize the right way.

Rocket generates a lot of hot gas. Normally the hot gases are wasted. SpaceX uses the hot gases for maneuvering.
