Sometimes, the hardest struggles are the ones no one else can see.
Many autistic individuals become so accustomed to masking their emotions and pushing through exhaustion that others may never realize just how drained they truly are. Even when their mental, emotional, or sensory energy has been depleted, they often continue trying to meet expectations, carry on conversations, and fulfill responsibilities without letting their fatigue show.
This invisible effort can make simply getting through the day a significant accomplishment. While those around them may see someone who appears to be doing “just fine,” there is often a great deal of unseen work taking place beneath the surface. Recognizing and acknowledging that hidden effort can foster greater empathy and remind autistic individuals that their perseverance matters, even when it goes unnoticed.

Why can everyday tasks feel so much more exhausting for an autistic person?
Many autistic individuals begin the day with a more limited reserve of mental and emotional energy than their neurotypical peers. Navigating sensory input, social interactions, changes in routine, and the demands of daily life can require a great deal of effort, meaning it often takes less for that energy to be depleted.
Burnout isn’t simply the result of “doing too much”—it can stem from the constant effort of processing the world in a way that others may never have to think about. Recognizing these differences can help foster greater understanding, encourage healthy boundaries, and remind autistic individuals that it’s okay to rest and recharge when needed.

Welcome back to The Ideal-ist, the YouTube Shorts companion series to The Autistic Mile.
In this series, Shane Gaffney explores the characters, games, shows, and stories that have profoundly resonated with him—not simply because they’re entertaining, but because they reflect the way he experiences the world as an autistic person. Each episode uses a piece of media as a springboard for discussing psychology, personal values, lived experiences, and the unique perspectives that autism can bring to storytelling.
In Episode 4, Shane takes a closer look at Marina Ida from the Splatoon series. Brilliant, thoughtful, and endlessly creative, Marina stands out as a character whose intelligence is matched by her compassion and curiosity. Shane discusses why her personality and outlook resonate so deeply with him, and how her story reflects themes of self-discovery, empathy, and how healthy friendships and bonds can really help someone reach their full potential as a person.
Whether you’re a longtime Splatoon fan or simply interested in hearing how fictional characters can connect with real-life experiences, this episode offers another glimpse into how media can become a meaningful lens through which to better understand the autistic perspective.

Anxiety is something many autistic individuals experience—but it doesn’t always look the same from one person to the next.
Anxiety can become increasingly common for autistic people as they grow older. Life’s responsibilities, social expectations, uncertainty, and accumulated experiences can all contribute to feelings of worry that affect daily life in different ways.
Anxious thoughts may become focused on the past through regrets or difficult memories, on the present through overwhelming situations and day-to-day pressures, or on the future through fear of the unknown and uncertainty about what lies ahead. While everyone’s experience is unique, recognizing these different forms of anxiety is an important step toward understanding and supporting autistic individuals with empathy and compassion.

Creativity can take many forms—and for many autistic individuals, it’s one of the most powerful ways they connect with the world.
Many people on the autism spectrum possess a deep well of creativity, whether it’s expressed through art, music, writing, storytelling, game design, problem-solving, or countless other passions. While everyone’s experience is different, creative pursuits can provide a meaningful outlet for self-expression, confidence, and connection.
That’s one of the driving goals behind The Autistic Mile: to provide a platform where autistic voices can be heard and where creativity is encouraged to flourish. By sharing stories, ideas, and unique perspectives, the podcast aims to celebrate the talents and imagination of individuals on the spectrum while helping others gain a deeper understanding of the autistic experience.

The Daily Weight of Autism: 5 Challenges You Don’t Always See
What does it really take for an autistic adult to get through an ordinary day?
In this episode of The Autistic Mile, Jim explores five often-invisible challenges that can affect daily life for autistic adults: autistic masking, dysregulation, anxiety, mental fatigue, and hyperfocus.
We look at the mental energy required to navigate social expectations, sensory and emotional overload, changes in routine, constant “what if?” thinking, exhaustion, and becoming so focused on one task that everything else seems to disappear.
For many autistic adults, there can be far more happening beneath the surface than other people realize.
🔋 Sometimes getting through the day is an accomplishment nobody else can see.
This episode isn't about portraying autism as something negative. It's about recognizing the additional mental work that can sometimes come with navigating a world that isn't designed around the way an autistic mind processes information.
At The Autistic Mile, we're sharing authentic perspectives on autism while working toward a larger mission: creating vocational training and meaningful employment opportunities for autistic adults.

Why do so many autistic people spend so much energy trying to fit in?
Many autistic individuals learn to hide or suppress their natural behaviors, mimic social norms, or put the needs of others before their own—not because they’re being dishonest, but because they genuinely want to be accepted, avoid conflict, and meet others halfway.
Masking can sometimes help people navigate social situations, but it can come at a cost. Constantly filtering one’s words, expressions, and behaviors can become mentally and emotionally exhausting, making it difficult to feel understood or comfortable being oneself. For this reason, it’s very important for those on the spectrum to exercise self-care and self-love where necessary, and allow for situations where they can let their guard down without fear.
