It has been found that playing familiar music to individuals with advanced Alzheimer’s has the ability to suddenly awaken and reclaim their humanity and ability to connect with others. Yet on the other hand, studies on the sense of hearing refer to it as the “achille’s ear” due to its inferior ability in creating long term memories. “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear...” Jesus repeats this phrase and many similar statements throughout the gospel narratives. Why the emphasis on hearing, on listening? As we curiously examine this sense and it’s spiritual implications, we can find grounding in the ambiguous phrase: “hearing God.”
