Jesus declares, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Meekness is not weakness or passivity but restrained power rooted in trust. Jesus Himself models this strength. He possesses authority yet refuses to grasp power or dominate others. Psalm 37, which Jesus quotes, says that meek people live with open hands, trusting God rather than forcing outcomes. Instead of grasping for control, security, or influence, they surrender to God’s goodness. Those who refuse to seize power will ultimately receive it, participating in God’s upside-down kingdom and restored creation, while living securely within His promises.

Within the larger vision of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus declares, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” This teaching flows from His “yoke.” It’s a rabbi’s way of life, rooted not in behavior management or shame, but in surrendered apprenticeship. The purity Jesus speaks of is not moral perfectionism or cultural control. It is wholehearted devotion, freed from hiding and blame. While salvation is Christ’s finished work, what we do matters because obedience flows from love. A pure heart also clears our distorted vision so we can walk closely with a God who is not distant, but near.

In Matthew’s account of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shifts from healing bodies to shaping hearts. As crowds begin to gather around His miracles, He pivots, offering the Beatitudes as “preventative medicine” for the soul. In Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are those who mourn,” Jesus promises nearness to the brokenhearted, which is a far more healing tonic than the mere relief of happiness. Mourning includes grief over sin, loss, injustice, and our fractured world. The blessing is comfort: Christ drawing near. Sorrow does not disqualify us; it positions us to experience His presence as our deepest need and truest hope

Drawing from Matthew 5:1–3, Pastor Russell explores the shocking opening of the Sermon on the Mount: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” Jesus ascends a mountain like Moses, but far surpasses him. Christ doesn’t merely deliver God’s word, but He embodies it. Unlike Sinai, the unclean are welcomed into God’s presence, helping us see that the Beatitudes are not instructions for earning blessing but announcements about who is blessed. Namely, those who know they have nothing left. In a world fueled by pride and self-sufficiency, Jesus declares that the kingdom belongs to the spiritually bereft. Helping us see that salvation is not found in the teaching, but in the Teacher.

Jesus ends the Lord’s Prayer where some of us forget to begin: with the reality of evil and our need for rescue. From “Our Father” to “the evil one,” the prayer acknowledges a world shaped by tension. One that sits between provision and scarcity, forgiveness and resentment, temptation and deliverance. Jesus teaches us to pray as he does, not because God would tempt us, but so that He would lead us wisely through a landscape filled with alluring sin. We choose proximity to our Shepherd, as we delight in him. And because we cannot save ourselves, we cry out for deliverance, trusting the God who rescues us from evil and, together, draws us back into His kingdom.

Jesus’ prayer, “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,” indicates a daily rhythm at the heart of the kingdom: receiving forgiveness and extending it. Forgiveness is not a feeling but a loving readiness. God will meet us with the merciful forgiveness we need every time we fail. And He asks us to extend it to others every time they fail us. Through Jesus’ teaching, stories, and actions, even as He hung on the Cross. Forgiveness is a defining mark of the cruciform life, a life deeply shaped by the love of Christ.

These rhythmic exchanges shape not only personal relationships but our response to suffering, injustice, and indifference in the world, calling us to a costly mercy that is interruptable and sets us free.

In this message, Pastor Steve explores Jesus’ prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread,” as a formative invitation into trust, not control. Rooted in Israel’s wilderness story (Exodus 16) and echoed in Paul’s teaching on contentment (Philippians 4), daily bread reminds us that God is the provider, not merely one option among many. Prayer is less about persuading God and more about reshaping us. It forms humility, dependence, and rest. God invites us to trust Him for today, resist self-sufficiency, and allow His provision to reveal His loving goodness in our lives.
