5 must watch players for the Red Raiders in 2023
Just under 55 days away from the kickoff of Tech Football. Let’s talk about 5 players that are “must watch” in 2023
Which Texas Tech player are you wanting to watch most in 2023?
5. LB - Jesiah Pierre
- He is truly a potential difference maker for Texas Tech this season
- He brings experience to the LB room
- Plus, he is shifting from OLB, to inside LB or MIKE LB for Tech
- He is a guy that I think will drastically help guys like Jacob Rodriguez and Isaac Smith make an easier adjustment to their bigger roles
- Pierre can get sideline to sideline
- Also, as we’ve seen in the past, he can get downhill and help in the run game and rush the passer
- I’d expect him to have a good year as the MIKE LB for Tech
4. WR - Drae McCray
- Tech needed a guy that can take the top off of the defense… they got one in Dre McCray
- Caught 129 passes for 1,888 yards and 17 touchdowns in only two seasons at Austin Peay
- two-time All-Conference honoree (1 in Atlantic Sun and 1 in Ohio Valley)
- Had 12 receptions for 92 yards against the nationally-ranked Crimson Tide
- Brings legit high 4.3 speed to the team
- Will help guys like Bradley and Loic get more space on the outside
- Also, McCray will likely be used in some gadget plays
Which WR are you most excited to watch this season for Texas Tech?
3. OLB/DE - Steve Linton/Myles Cole
- Yes, I did just name two players and I’m only counting them as one
- Tyree Wilson departure to the NFL has left a massive hole in the Tech EDGE group (no bun intended)
- Linton and Cole have enough upside to fill that gap as a duo
- Linton is a guy that in my bold predictions video, I said he’d get double digit sacks
- Myles Cole is a guy that I think can also be a true impact guy and get 6-8 sacks this season
- Having guys like Bradford and Hutchings on that Tech DL no doubt helps
One word to describe the Texas Tech defense going into the 2023 season?
2. LG/C - Cole Spencer/Rusty Staats
- This position group was in need of improvement
- The Red Raiders did just that
- Spencer had to get a medical RS last year due to a knee issue, he’s 100% now
- Staats, transfers in from WKU and like Spencer has played for Zach Kittley
- The biggest thing for me and why I’m watching Spencer and Staats the most is the “trickle down effect”
- With those guys at LG and C, it allows others on the OL to go to their more natural positions
- LT: Mills | LG: Spencer | C: Staats | RG: Wilburn | RT: Rogers
- That’s a quality and experience OL
- Plus Tech has impactful depth on the OL now as well
Alright, I think we all know who #1 is…
1. QB - Tyler Shough
- This is the obvious #1
- Shough is 8-1 as as starter at Texas Tech
- 3,879 passing yards and 29 TDs at Texas Tech… I think he could that if not a bit more in the TD department this year
- When he has stayed healthy he’s proven he can win in multiple ways for the Red Raiders
- Now, he’s healthy, playing in the same offense in back to back years for the 1st time in college
- OL is improved and more experienced
- WR group has more experience and separaters
- RB room is still deep with Brooks and Valdez and not to mention Donnell
- This is 100% prove it year for Tyler Shough more so for himself than anyone else
- He’s a really good QB and personally I think he’s one that could be viewed as Top 2 QB in the entire conference
