Kings Weston Estate was once famous throughout Europe for the gardens and spectacular views. It attracted German princes, Russian aristocracy and even the French nobleman Malsherbes, defence council to Louis XVI – obviously before they were both guillotined.
The last episode talked about the early days but now we look into the last century onwards, examining what the house was used for and how it helped the local community. PLUS there's an interview with the new owner, John Barbey who's love of history really shines through.

Situated high up on a hill overlooking the Severn Estuary and Avonmouth, the 28 acres of wooded parkland surrounding Kings Weston House are popular with local walkers.
Although only small by stately home standards Kings Weston House has some unique features and has been described as one of Sir John Vanbrugh's finest compact houses.
The park is now owned by Bristol City Council and the National Trust. The Kings Weston Action Group (KWAG) actively champions the historic estate and works to conserve it.
Listen to the story of the early years of this little known historical gem.

In 1876 John died while saving the express train, the Flying Dutchman, from disaster. It was a split second decision that would, not only change the lives of his friends and family, but also bring up questions in Parliament.
I wasn't able to include this in the show but here's a poem written about John Chiddy at the time.
MEMORY OF JOHN CHIDDY.
With roar of whirlwind wheels
The flashing train flies by
No shock the traveller feels
He hears cry
Nor starts, nor holds his breath,
Nor wonders, nor looks back ;
He saw not what dire Death
Couched iv his track.
But one man saw and stayed not,
One man sprang forth to save,
And for their lives who prayed not
His own life gave.
The train bore on In thunder
The travellers on their way:
Beneath them, clov'n asunder,
Their saviour lay. more his life-drops wet
The iron pathway's side :
The iron folk forget
For whom he died.

"At 9.20 pm I suddenly found myself blown out of my bunk and landed on the floor of my cabin. On my rude awakening I did not grasp what had happened until a brother officer came running off the bridge, and said we had been torpedoed..."
Hear the story of the war crime that shocked the world from those that survived. As well as details about The Llandovery Castle, a Canadian opera by composer by Stephanie Martin and librettist Paul Ciufo, created as an act of remembrance to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the hospital ship Llandovery Castle on June 27, 1918.
The opera focusses on the lives and service of 14 Canadian Nursing Sisters who died in the tragedy. The calm confidence, skill and selflessness of Canadian nurses during the Great War stand in stark contrast to the chaos and violence that surrounded them. From the horrors inflicted by inhuman trench warfare, the Sisters offered healing and compassion to soldiers on both sides of the conflict.
The work premiered in two workshops performances in Toronto in June, 2018, to enthusiastic audiences and critical praise. If you're interested in seeing the opera about this tragedy, then just click here.

The Llandovery Castle was travelling to Bristol after taking wounded Canadian servicemen home. She was displaying all the right signals to say she was a Hospital ship but just near the Fastnet lighthouse, she was torpedoed. What happened next angered the world.

It was an ordinary late afternoon in July when 14 year old Mary Waggett was strolling around her local area near her house when she saw something floating in the water. This shocking discovery starts off an investigation into the death of Madamoiselle Albertina, who's real name was Louisa Maud Evans, a girl of only 14 years of age and the unusual circumstances of the premature end of her life.

Just after 11am on 21 November 1888, a sudden explosion rocked the Bathurst Basin. A high wall of flame followed by a cloud of black smoke hurled one of the crew across the harbour to land with a broken leg. What happened to the other three on board was soon to be discovered.
