Romero’s original classic, Night of the Living Dead, has literally transcended time so effectively that it still holds firm as a cultural staple in the horror community today. Without it, we may never have truly explored zombies in any media form, and all of the excellent art that has coincided with them. But on the other side of things, we also wouldn’t have been given Night of the Living Dead 3D, which has about as much in common with the original classic as I do with Gianni Versace. The 3D reimagining is about as good as you can expect from looking at the cover, but of course there’s much more to unpack than first meets the eye. Guy Ritchie is one of my personal favorite auteurs in modern cinema. Sure, his talents do have inherent flaws (style over substance?; over reliance on visual gimmicks? movies made for dads? Perhaps all of the above?), but undoubtedly Ritchie is a master of crafting entertaining stories that focus on quick witted brits and snappy dialogue to carry dense plot lines through morally murky territory with levity. So, naturally I was stoked to see King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword! Until the reviews came out, and I allowed myself to be dissuaded from the theatrical experience. But today, I’m here with my favorite tall guest to redeem myself and answer the age old question: is it really as bad as the critics said? The answer is simple. It’s got Charlie Hunnam, how bad could it be?

If you’ve never heard of Sleepover, have no fear. I certainly hadn’t heard of it. But it’s a cult classic when it comes to tween angst pictures replicating the Disney-Star Magic. It has a laundry list of new-Hollywood greats such as Brie Larson, Evan Peters, Steve Carell, and Jane Lynch! Sleepover certainly won’t assault your senses upon viewing, but its star power definitely props it up as more than the sum of its parts. And the dancing is 10/10 must see. Episode Description:A change in scheduled programming (at least what I had scheduled for this week), because I just HAD to finally review David Lynch’s cult classic Dune. I very recently finished reading the novel for the first time and felt it necessary to further hype myself by diving directly into the Lynch adaptation and wow was I rewarded...with frustration. As a novel fan, I found Dune (1984) to be a brutally clumsy interpretation with a strong desire to be faithful that ultimately ended up being its demise. And while I don’t consider myself a Dune expert, I simply had to air my grievances on the podcast in the hopes that some dedicated fans would concur with my analysis and help get me even more hyped for the next adaption later this year! So, please enjoy this review where I shout at myself for an hour and a half!

Mortal Kombat Annihilation is a movie I made with action figures when I was much younger. Thin on plot, yes. Thick on action, you bet your ass. It’s also a movie that was made by actual professionals, and somehow it has the exact same qualifications for its plot/action ratio. Is Mortal Kombat Annihilation ‘good’? What is good, really? Because if it’s just to bring the joy in seeing something so delightfully mishandled and cartoonish, then yes! It’s very good! But if not, then I’m afraid Annihilation has a ways to go. Would I watch it again? Of course. Would I recommend you watch it? That depends. What’s your tolerance for the amount of backflips you want to see in a film?

When you love something, set it free. In this instance, I’ve been doing just that with Mortal Kombat. The beloved video game series has always been near and dear to my heart. I love the juvenile violence. The 80’s action movie aesthetic. The detailed backstories of revenge and tragedy layered over competitive 2D set pieces of gore and grime. And I set it free...for this. The 1995 film isn’t all bad, of course. There’s commendable effort to please the studio heads as well as the video game fans. But at what cost? Mortal Kombat (1995) loses the gore, the snark, the panache and substitutes a load of exposition and quick cutting! Our review pulls no punches (pun intended). But here’s to hoping the sequel can deliver on the failed promise...

Odd for me to admit that I grew up with Sahara virtually tattooed to the back of my eyelids. This McConaughey classic was an absolute staple for the Damaia clan, and yet it has been largely forgotten in the grand list of classic cinema. So after many many years of watching other things, I decided to go back and finally revisit this action adventure epic. Was it still a classic in the end? I'm not too sure. What I am sure about however is that Steve Zahn is underrated, Matthew McConaughey may actually be better looking with a mustache, and solar energy plants in the middle of the sahara do make for interesting locations if you want a hero to punch a bad guy on a roof. Hook is a beloved childhood memory for many, many, many people. I was not one of them. I used to be young and dumb. And while I may be old and dumb now, I feel I’m not quite as dumb as I once was. Hence why my opinion on Speed Racer has DRASTICALLY adjusted. Yes, it’s a movie where the lead character is literally named ‘Speed Racer’. Yes, the graphic effects are a myriad of lights and movements that potentially drown the screen. And yes, Gibby from Icarly plays an unfortunately irritating character that has a constant presence in the film. But Speed Racer has a tremendous amount to cheer on all the way to the finish line. A heartfelt story, some exceptional acting, and some of the best transitional editing in modern filmmaking. This movie absolutely rocks, I was absolutely wrong back in the day, and we are gonna break down all the reasons why on this week’s episode. We celebrate 50 EPISODES in the only way we possibly could by bringing in The Citizen Kane of ‘Bad Movies’, The Room! Of course it was the #1 requested review. Of course, I had always planned for it to be the big #50. But I had no idea it would be quite as much fun as it was. The entire Sound Pollination crew has gathered for this epic event and created easily one of my personal favorite episodes of all time. We laughed. We cried. We talked about spoons. And most importantly, we gave credit where it’s due. Not many people can say that made a movie in a lifetime, let alone made a movie that people love with their entire hearts.
