My precious grandmother could not withstand the cruel and wasting disease ALS forever. In the winter and spring of 1995 she finally succumbed to the decline. It was the end of an era. She was the last matriarch of her generation. Her passing was marked by a profound experience for me, one that stays with me forever and gives me a special shield from fear.

I was honored on June 1st by the Arts Council of Rockland with a lifetime achievement award for my work in local theater. It was a very moving event, with friends and family in attendance, and here are some of the highlights. I am very grateful to my loved ones for all their support both at this event and as I head off into my future adventures.

These are the big communal events we all go through as families, and when you're married you get it from both sides. New babies balance out the older generation slipping away. If we can float above and look down we can see how it all balances out, but it seems intense while we're down on the ground and in the thick of it as I was in 1995.

I am an expert nester. I love to create beautiful spaces for my loved ones to inhabit, and I was doing so much of that when we first started to settle in our new home. From paint treatments for every room to garden spaces, I delighted in making the house our own and discovering all its many joys.

Because parenting in early childhood is not busy enough, I kept a journal for each of the kids to have someday that told of their growing and which they could have one day when it meant something to them. Don't ask when I had time to do this. That is a futile question. But Dakota's journal is adorable, and here's a piece of it so you can judge for yourself.

The wonderful old colonial house that we bought and began to renovate in early 1994 had a few other occupants in it who began showing up in various ways. Fortunately they were benign and so they made for good stories, but we never felt we needed to summon an exorcist!

As with all phases of life there is joy and sadness. While I was sharing my early motherhood with my grandmother and enjoying her attentions to my children so much we were among the first to hear about a terrible diagnosis that would eventually lead to her death. It's strange to know what will kill you. It gives you time to concentrate on the things that matter most, but it is also infuriating in it's steady march towards an end. I suppose all of us are living that way but just less consciously than someone who has a spelled-out prognosis.
