A brief report from Worcestershire, and then I jump back one small step to pick up the story of my dad's passing. I had somehow thought it was in 1999, but it was a year earlier. That just goes to show how much his presence influenced my life then, and now. Ah, well... family is a combination of blood and choice.

Moving is one of those huge life events that tests everything you're made of, and some of us were not passing the test. Even with two Christmas trees the new construction house we moved into didn't seem cosy. We discovered that we were bound to obey various rules set down by the neighborhood housing authority with regard to our garden decor. That did not go over well. All in all, I was struggling to accept my new environment.

As I was starting a new job with a new Montessori school down south, I was holding to my training and trying to run my classroom as I had been taught. That was proving unpopular with my colleagues.

When I learned that one of my students had suffered a terrible assault outside of school and that no one was willing to do anything about it, I was angry and really started to see that I was very much out of place in this environment.

Family vacations can't help but come with family drama, so I've again tried to figure out how it gets to me so badly. I don't know. Do we ever figure it out? If you have any insights please let me know.

But meanwhile in 1998, my kids were growing and learning about the birds and the bees and the lizards. So cute. Hope the cuteness outweighs the drama.

As your kids grow I think you start looking for ways to draw out the qualities that you value by offering them various activities to stimulate their enthusiasm. Dave's family was very centered on sports, so he made sure the kids started playing Little League and soccer from an early age. I wanted to make sure they got the balance of cultural instruction as well, but neither of them seemed all too interested in music. It was an ongoing exploration, the fruits of which might not show up for years to come.
