I spent my 40th birthday with people I had only just gotten to know during my few weeks at the Shakespeare & Company intensive (listen to the previous 2 episodes to hear the whole story). The day involved learning some stage combat techniques and this proved to be a very scary place for a lot of people. It was a day of wild ups and downs in many ways. The Intensive ended with marvelous performances from everyone involved, and I left there feeling like I wanted to do this work for the rest of my life.

The Shakespeare and Company intensive was challenging both physically and mentally and out of a group of 60 people who began it, only 57 people finished. One of those people who dropped out was my scene partner, and that was brought about because I stood up for myself and asked for what I needed. It was another huge learning milestone.

After two productions with my young company of players I decided that I needed a whole lot more training in order to raise the caliber of performances to a whole new level. I enrolled in a month-long intensive workshop with Shakespeare and Company in the Berkshires. This class was not only an extensive education in Shakespeare directing and acting techniques, but it made me a more complete and present human being. I will be forever grateful!

On the cusp on turning 40 many things were changing for me. One unpleasant thing I had to get through was my first mammogram, but it was there that a nurse opened my eyes to a whole new world. I had no idea that people used computers to find dates. Match.com was in it's primitive infancy in early 2001, but it started me down a whole strange and wonderful road.

There's nothing I love more than a group of people doing a creative project together. I had that with the kids in rehearsals, but those kids needed some exciting costumes. That's when we started to pull together a sewing bee. Something like that. 

Amidst all that crafty happiness we also got some very rough news.

My theater company doubled in size and clearly needed to continue as the demand was overwhelming. Then I got a very curious offer of a new place to live. It was a place I would have never otherwise considered, but hey, don't look a gift-house in the mouth, right?

The first production of The Children's Shakespeare Theatre was coming together in a full expression of community effort such as I could have never anticipated. When the curtain finally went up on the show it was a blockbuster! OK, it felt so in our tiny hamlet. It was indeed a rousing success and everyone felt fully satisfied and ready for more.

The close of the 20th century brought about many volatile transitions, both privately and publicly, and the Y2K mania was a strange one. Looking back, I think it started the new millennium off with the kind of mass hysteria over nothing that would ripen over the next couple of decades.

I have just completed the NC500! It's a glorious drive around the northern Highlands of Scotland, across miles of one-track roads, some of them terrifying, and past acres and acres of rolling heather-covered hills. I have been tested and found competent in many ways. I have met some lovely people and shared some brief but satisfying encounters. It has been a time to treasure and remember forever.

As my children began the painful process of learning to navigate divorced parents, I had to find something that would alchemize all that pain into positive feelings.
