Helmet, the iconic alternative metal band that emerged from New York City in the late 1980s, stands as a testament to the power of artistic innovation within the realm of heavy music. Founded by frontman and guitarist Page Hamilton, Helmet has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and metal with their unique blend of raw aggression, intricate songwriting, and thought-provoking lyrics.
The band's journey began in 1989 when they released their debut album, "Strap It On," on the independent label Amphetamine Reptile Records. This album, marked by its deceptively simple yet highly effective riffing, immediately caught the attention of fans and critics alike. Page Hamilton's fractured soloing style and distinct vocal delivery set Helmet apart from the burgeoning alternative music scene, where they stood as a harbinger of a new era in heavy music.
Helmet's breakthrough came with their second album, "Meantime," released in 1992 on Interscope Records. This album showcased Hamilton's songwriting prowess and cemented the band's status as a heavy-hitting force in the industry. Tracks like "Unsung" and "In the Meantime" became anthems for a generation, and the album itself achieved Gold certification, signifying its enduring impact.
What sets Helmet apart from many of their peers is their dedication to musical intricacy and innovation. Page Hamilton, a trained jazz guitarist with a background in avant-garde music, brought a level of sophistication to their heavy sound that was unparalleled. The band's use of drop-D tuning, unconventional time signatures, and dissonant chords created a sonic landscape that challenged the conventions of heavy music. Songs like "Wilma's Rainbow" and "Rollo" exemplify this complexity, offering listeners a glimpse into the band's commitment to pushing the boundaries of their genre.
After releasing two more albums, "Betty" in 1994 and "Aftertaste" in 1997, the original lineup of Helmet disbanded in 1998. However, Page Hamilton's artistic journey was far from over. He continued to explore various musical avenues, collaborating with artists like David Bowie, Caspar Brötzmann, and Wire, among others. This period of exploration allowed him to expand his sonic palette and further solidify his status as a musical innovator.
In 2004, Hamilton reformed Helmet with an all-new lineup, releasing several albums, including "Size Matters" (2004), "Monochrome" (2006), "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010), and "Dead To The World" (2016). These albums demonstrated that Helmet's spirit of innovation and uncompromising intensity remained intact, even with a new lineup.
In 2023, Helmet announced the release of their ninth studio album, "Left," set to be released on November 10th on earMUSIC. This announcement was accompanied by the "Look Left Tour," taking the band through various regions of North America. It marked their first tour since the pandemic, and fans eagerly anticipated hearing new material from this legendary band.
Helmet's journey through the realms of heavy music and artistic innovation has been nothing short of remarkable. Page Hamilton's unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions has led to the creation of music that transcends genres and continues to captivate audiences. Helmet's legacy as pioneers of alternative metal is secure, and their enduring influence on heavy music is a testament to the enduring power of artistic innovation.

Rooted in the heart of the Texas Hill Country and raised on the rich tapestry of American roots music, Briscoe emerges as a rising Americana folk-rock band with a compelling story to tell. Their debut album, "West of It All," set to release on September 15th via ATO Records, is a coming-of-age soundtrack that explores the landscape of their Texas origins while embracing the modern evolution of this cherished genre. With a unique blend of classic and contemporary influences, Briscoe's music transports listeners to the rural countryside of Texas while maintaining a fresh, forward-looking sound.
The album, "West of It All," was crafted in the Lone Star State but found its recording home in North Carolina under the guidance of Grammy-nominated producer Brad Cook, known for his work with Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. The result is an album that defies traditional musical boundaries, seamlessly blending elements of folk, rock, and pop. The first single, "The Well," is a rootsy, foot-stomping anthem that captures the essence of Briscoe's energy and passion. Meanwhile, the second single, "Sparrows," offers a glimpse into their storytelling prowess, accompanied by a mesmerizing music video.
Briscoe's journey began when they were signed by ATO Records while still undergraduates at the University of Texas at Austin. Drawing inspiration from their college experiences, the band weaves tales of heartbreak, life lessons, and adventures in the countryside into their music. Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton, the core members of Briscoe, are highly capable multi-instrumentalists who bring depth and authenticity to their songs. With acoustic guitars, plucky banjo, and harmonies that soar, they create a sound that nods to the golden era of folk and rock while embracing a modern sensibility.
Briscoe's journey from humble beginnings, including free backyard performances near their college campus, to sold-out gigs at prestigious venues like Antone's Nightclub and The Continental Club Gallery is a testament to their organic growth and musical prowess. They've opened for acclaimed artists like Noah Kahan, Ruston Kelly, Zach Bryan, and Caamp, solidifying their place in the contemporary folk and Americana scene.
With "The Well" already making waves on Americana radio as the #1 most added song, Briscoe's future looks promising. As they prepare to headline a fall tour in support of "West of It All," Briscoe is poised to make a lasting impact on the Americana and folk-rock landscape. Their self-assured and genre-fluid music charts its own course, inviting listeners to embark on a musical journey that transcends time and place. "West of It All" promises to be an album that leaves a lasting impression on the ever-evolving world of Americana folk-rock.

In the realm of metal music, few bands have left as indelible a mark as Type O Negative. Formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1989, by the enigmatic and charismatic Peter Steele (vocals, bass), along with Josh Silver (keyboards), Kenny Hickey (guitar), and Sal Abruscato (drums), Type O Negative emerged as a groundbreaking force in the world of dark and subversive metal.
Type O Negative's music defies easy categorization, blending elements of gothic, doom, and industrial metal with a healthy dose of black humor. Their sound is a sonic tapestry of haunting melodies, crushing riffs, and deep, baritone vocals—Peter Steele's signature voice being one of the most recognizable and distinctive in the metal world.
The band's debut album, "Slow, Deep and Hard," released in 1991, set the stage for their unique brand of metal. Songs like "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity" and "Xero Tolerance" explored themes of heartbreak, nihilism, and misanthropy, with a heavy dose of sarcasm. The album was an unapologetic foray into the darkest corners of the human psyche, setting a precedent for the band's future work.
Type O Negative's sophomore release, "Bloody Kisses" (1993), catapulted them to international acclaim. This album is often considered their magnum opus, blending elements of gothic romance with gloomy atmospheres. The hit single "Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)" became an anthem, capturing the hearts of goth and metal fans alike. With tracks like "Christian Woman" and "Too Late: Frozen," the album showcased Type O Negative's ability to craft both heavy and melodic songs.
One of the band's defining features was their sense of humor and subversive approach to their music and image. Peter Steele's witty and often self-deprecating lyrics provided a stark contrast to the brooding music, making Type O Negative a band that could be simultaneously dark and tongue-in-cheek. Their cover of Seals and Crofts' "Summer Breeze" on "Bloody Kisses" became a beloved fan favorite, showcasing their ability to infuse humor into unexpected places.
In 1996, they released "October Rust," an album that further solidified their status as pioneers of dark metal. This record featured tracks like "Love You to Death" and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend," showcasing their versatility in creating music that ranged from melancholic ballads to raucous anthems.
Tragedy struck in 2010 when Peter Steele passed away, leaving a void in the music world that could never be filled. The loss of such a singular talent was deeply felt by fans and fellow musicians alike. His towering presence and darkly charismatic persona were central to Type O Negative's identity.
Type O Negative's legacy endures through their music, which continues to resonate with fans old and new. Their discography, including albums like "World Coming Down" (1999)
