HOW TO BECOME A TEACHER
A good friend is considering a career change and wants to be a teacher. In this episode, we share our tips and experiences on what to do BEFORE credential school. These tips will help guide the aspiring teacher on what they need to do to help build their skills and passion in teaching.
We drove from the Bay Area to LA and it was nice to see the landscape green again. After several years of severe drought, we had some major storms the past month and it helped make the mountains and plain beautiful again.

* Substituting- check with local/state requirements
* Teach abroad (JET, Teach For America, Peace Corps, etc.)
* Create a Personal Learning Network (staying up-to-date)- FB, Twitter, teacher forums, education sites (useful as a teacher also) like Edutopia, Edweek, State website and colleges/universities
* connections/network with other educators- family, friends, HS counselors, libraries
* Skills that will supplement your teaching
* tech skills
* GAFE, iPAD/Laptop workflow, Apps, Search, basic troubleshooting
* STEM/Maker Movement
* Fluency practice- read aloud, asking comprehension questions/vocabulary- context clues
* check your desired state you want to teach in for credential requirements- discounts (credential program, fingerprint, CPR/1st Aid)- master’s degree (combined credential), multiple vs. single subject credential, teaching credentials—> administration credential (give yourself options for the future)
* familiarize yourself w/the Common Core State Standards
* Tests: CBEST, CSET, National Board Certification, RICA, Liberal Studies Majors, read about students with learning differences, ELL’s, SEL, learn about different cultures
* Professional Portfolio
* Updated Resumé
* Have a Blog/Webpage
* LinkedIn
* Google searching for you (HR will search you!)
* FB clean profile; control privacy
* Control web footprint
