Jon Norfolk is head of coaching at one of Great Britain’s most successful Olympic programmes, British Cycling. Jon is another of our guests that has experienced competing and coaching in different cultures and environments. Having worked previously with the Australian Track Cycling Team and been head coach of the hugely successful GB Paralympic cycling programme, he was also both an International cyclist in his own right and also cycled as a tandem partner including setting a world record in the kilo at the 2008 Paralympic World Cup.
We chatted about coaching the athlete In front of you and not the programme, individualisation and performance planning, the importance of having plenty of tools available to you as a coach as well as how he measures and monitors performance. Scott Drawer is the current Director of Sport at Millfield School, one of the UK’s leading independent school’s. Before that he was Head of Research and Innovation at UK Sport and also held positions as Athletic Performance Manager at the Rugby Football Union and worked in the Sky Performance Hub in Cycling.
I first met Scott in his role at UK Sport almost 15 years ago as I asked him to help me tap into the amazing work being done across the UK sport innovation and research network to help the England sevens programme I was running at the time .

This week its part 2 of my chat with former footballer Robbie Elliott. Robbie spent two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total. Last week we chatted about his own playing career and some of the iconic managers he worked under including Ossie Ardilles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalgleish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson.
This week we focus on his career post playing from his role at Newcastle in the sports science department to moving to the US to join the Nike research lab and the other performance work he’s been involved since his retirement. It’s a fascinating and insightful journey.

After last weeks chat with Darius Charles, we stay on the football theme with another ex Professional footballer, Robbie Elliott. Robbie had almost two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for his beloved Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total, which also included spells at Sunderland, Leeds, Hartlepool and an eventful four years at Bolton Wanderers.
Over his career, he’ worked under some iconic managers including Ossie Ardiles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson and we chat about all of those managers and the twists and turns Robbie had across his career and his learning from that.
I met Robbie first when he was working for the Nike research lab and he’s forged a career in sports technology, innovation and performance since his retirement. All of that we will chat about in part two next week, but as we sat outside the bustling Westfield shopping centre in West London, we started with Robbie’s time in the Newcastle academy and how that compares to the modern-day set-up.

This week I’m delighted to bring you a chat with someone who grabs life by both hands, former footballer Darius Charles.
Darius retired from professional footballer just a matter of weeks ago after playing professionally for sixteen years for the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford and most recently, AFC Wimbledon.
We talk about how he feels about that and also the journey football has taken him on personally. His mum had him when she was sixteen years old and Darius has had plenty of obstacles over his life that he has managed to overcome and use as the energy he brings to everyone he meets.
We had this conversation in a recording studio close to where Darius spent a large part of his childhood, in Hanwell, West London. Darius is currently being followed by a documentary crew and our conversation in the studio will be part of a programme called ’Sidelines’, which will be out later in the year.
I got to know Darius about a year ago and since then I’ve always enjoyed and looked forward to every conversation we have ever had. As he says himself, he’s a very fiery character and I think by the end of this conversation you will see how he is using that desire in a positive way, a passion that will change lives.
We talk about role models, creating opportunities and being self-sufficient, the fear of your career always being one manager’s decision away from ending as well as dealing with being loaned out and Injured. But we start with that difficult decision to hang up his boots.

Todays show is the first part of another brilliant conversation, this time with rugby coach Stuart Lancaster.
Stuart is currently coaching Leinster Rugby and he’s held leadership, management and coaching positions at many levels of the game including being the former England Rugby head coach. I’ve also worked with Stuart during my time at England Rugby and have coached against him during his time at Leeds and we discuss that time in both our lives later in this show. He’s a wealth of knowledge around a whole host of topics and over the two shows we delve into leadership, joining new organisations, transitioning from one role to another, creating and maintaining cultures as well as a tonne and of references to books and resources that has helped Stuart continue his learning journey and we started with Stuart explaining where he sees culture sitting in the construction area of a high performance environment.
