The festive season is a time when criminals particularly target people through online crimes. Vuyo Mpako, Head of Digital Banking at Standard Bank, spoke to Bruce about different types of phishing scams and the steps one should follow when they are a victim of phishing scams. The Transport Department says it has maximised the number of police on national roads this festive season. Police have a strong presence on various highways, including the N1 north towards Limpopo, the N1 towards Cape Town and the N3 in Durban. The department says law enforcement will be ensuring drivers abide by all the rules of the road. Spokesperson Ismael Mnisi says both pedestrians and drivers should avoid anything that could put their lives in danger. “We have maximised our visibility and would like to warn all motorists to ensure to make sure their vehicles are road worthy and they adhere to the rules of the road.

Nine charges, including treason and conspiracy to murder, have been laid against the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s Robert McBride, former top Hawk Shadrack Sibiya, private investigator Paul O’Sullivan and a crime intelligence officer by Gauteng Hawks Boss Prince Mokotedi. The Western Cape High Court has ruled that SABC’s Hlaudi Motsoeneng be removed from his position. Krish Naidoo, recently resigned member of the board, had previously warned about the illegal appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng.  He speaks about governance challenges at the SABC and whether is this the end for Motsoeneng.

The department is currently holding a three day maths indaba in Pretoria which is aimed at coming up with ways to address the problem in the public schooling system. Yesterday, in a statement giving an update on steps taken to implement the recommendations of the Farlam Commission of Inquiry, the Presidency announced that government is ready to compensate the families of the Marikana victims.
