The Best Soccer Show

The Best Soccer Show boys are back to talk American soccer.

First up, the new USWNT and USMNT kits. Then Jason and Jared talk about Mauricio Pochettino's lack of communication with Sergino Dest. What does it mean!??

Then the big question looming for the summer: Should the likes of Christian Pulisic and Jedi Robinson be given some time off after a long European season?

Jared and Jason got together to talk out the narratives around the USMNT at the moment. Bruce Arena had a go at the idea of a foreign coach for the USMNT while US Soccer saw fit to drop a mini-interview with Mauricio Pochettino with lots of talk about playing with pride.

The boys also debated whether Brenden Aaronson has a chance to make the cut at a Premier League version of Leeds and we threw out some idea for best "Star Wars"-style names among footballers.

There are jokes and drops and more in the episode, because that's what The Best Soccer Show does. Shout out to everyone that joined us for the live recording on YouTube.

Jason and Jared are back together to talk about the big happenings in American soccer.

Did Borussia Dortmund tell Gio Reyna to find a new club in the summer? The boys take a hard look at the unrealized American talent and try to figure out the best place for him to play.

Then Jason and Jared consider the idea of Kevin De Bruyne in MLS and assess which of the four teams linked to the Manchester City midfielder needs him most.

After that, BSS gets into the news that Gianni Infantino wants to hold a one-game playoff between LAFC and Club America for the right to join the field of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

We're covering a ton of ground on this episode of The Best Soccer Show.

Jason starts by dropping news of the Gold Cup draw for this summer. The USMNT goes into the continental tournament needing to improve dramatically under Mauricio Pochettino after a poor Nations League.

Dan Vaughn of Protagonist Soccer to talk about the draw, tell us about his 23 USMNT shirts (23????), and discuss split allegiances in his soccer household.

Then Dan hangs around to discuss the big USL Championship TV ratings from the weekend. WHAT DOES IT MEAN???? More than 750k watched second division soccer on Sunday. BOOM TIMES BABY.

Then Dan and Jason discuss the news that MLS owners tabled a vote on switching the league calendar to the fall-to-spring version used in most of Europe.

Finally, Dan leaves and Jason heads into a review of the state of the American player in MLS and whether the league should do more to center Americans in its on-field product. How does Liga MX do it with Mexican players?

That leads into a review of 28 MLS teams (Toronto and Montreal get left out) and their efforts to grow players that could ultimately held the USMNT. WE GOT TIERS.

Jason goes solo this week to work through some thoughts about the likability of the USMNT following a story by Beau Dure at The Guardian (read it here), followed by an unpacking of Mauricio Pochettino's comments about wanting to return to Tottenham Hotspur (and what that might mean for his commitment to the USMNT), before he gets to the fun stuff and talks about the shenanigans in the US Open Cup.

Chattanooga was a scene. The show finishes up with some CONCACAF Champions Cup reflections. Is this the year for ML.....bwah haha of course not.

You can support the show by joining the Besties Patreon. We've got an incredible community of soccer fans on the Besties Slack, plus bonus content like Jason's "Daily Davis" dispatches. Jason talks soccer, life, and the behind-the-scenes experience of working in talk radio.

The show needs more ratings and reviews, particularly on Apple Podcasts. Drop us a comment or a Pick Your Poison why don't cha.

Jason mentioned his new show Morning Kickaround 8 or 15 times in this episode. That show happens live on YouTube Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 AM ET and is also available as a podcast.

Jason also mentioned his new newsletter, full of links to his work and occasional writings on American soccer. It's called "Jason Davis Soccer Eagle" because he's a weirdo. Thanks!

Jason goes solo...for a bit...on this episode of The Best Soccer Show.

After Jason talks through some feelings around the USMNT, Jonathan Tannenwald joins to get into the attitude of the players and some quotes from head coach Mauricio Pochettino about effort at the international level.

Then JTT joins via video to help Jason put together a "SOMETHING TO PROVE" group that could bring some pride back to the USMNT program.
