Because 1) calling for billionaire exfoliation isn’t violence, it’s self-care for the species and Planet, 2) it’s about as likely as Musk paying his taxes, and 3) given our audience’s hopefully growing preference for logging off and touching grass, the odds of revolution-by-podcast are… well, statistically negligible....or are they?

The mass media is defined as a handful of corporations whose role involves informing, entertaining, and inculcating us with the values and beliefs that will help us integrate into the dominant institutions of society, i.e., mentally condition us to be obedient indentured servants of the masters. "Social" media, books, movies, newspapers, and sitcoms all train us to be passive consumers and are part of the mass media ecosystem.

In a world of immense wealth inequality and the social tension that comes from clashing class interest, to fulfill its role the mass media must engage in systematic propaganda. We are not right-winger Trump supporters that are dismissing the NYT, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, BBC, and NPR as "fake news"—nay! The media theory presented in the book is based on a market analysis; Edward Herman was, after all, a Finance Prof. at Penn. The theory's premise is centered on 5 filters that decide what is newsworthy:

1) The nature of ownership of these giant firms

2) The preference of advertisers setting media success over buyer choice

3) The sourcing of news set by reciprocity of interests and economic necessity

4) Managing the media by use of flak

5) The need for a common enemy.
