Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; (2) Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; (1Tim 4:1-2)
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. (2Cor 10:4-6)
Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. (1Tim 4:16).
(I) IDENTIFYING AND ANSWERING SUBTLE TRAITS OF PROGRESSIVE CHRISTIANITY
A. Inclusivism excludes exclusivism
A.1. We are opposed to any exclusive dogma that limits the search for truth and free inquiry 1
A.2. Sees conservatives as arrogant dualists … divide reality and people into categories like God and Satan, heaven and hell, sin and salvation, saved and unsaved, belief and unbelief.
A.3. Strongly critical of fundamentalism and conservative practices
A.3.1. They criticized fundamentalist to be “Unwilling to do God’s work and aghast over the decline of dogma they deemed fundamental, fundamentalists of the late 19th and early 20th century rejected the Social Gospel.”2
A.3.2. Against churches with a “culture of judgment”, and who have a “fondness for black and- white, either-or thinking” 3
B. God’s love is unconditional 4
B.1. Because “God will accomplish the salvation of every person in this life or the next no matter how long we resist”, “the purpose of life was to live graciously.”
B.2. The time is now for us to “abandon theologies and philosophies that destroy and separate. We must embrace ideas that heal and unite. More than ideas, we need to embrace people—those who like us and more important, those who do not.
B.3. It is not about accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior, but to consider his example and imitate his way.
