In the sphere of religion, in particular, the present time is a time of conflict; the great redemptive religion which has always been known as Christianity is battling against a totally diverse type of religious belief, which is only the more destructive of the Christian faith because it makes use of traditional Christian terminology... And indeed the movement is so various in its manifestations that one may almost despair of finding any common name which will apply to all its forms. 1

(I) ECLECTIC ISMS IN PROGRESSIVE CHRISTIANITY

A. What underlies Progressive Christianity?

A.1. Progressive Christianity is in effect an amalgamation of the past heretical “isms” repackaged into a new seductive form.

A.2. It is a potpourri of mixing and combining of liberalism, modernism, post-modernism, existentialism, humanism, the social gospel, and more. Progressive Christianity’s mix and match of the different heretical “isms” can make it not so readily identifiable.

A.3. Under these names, evangelicals would probably reject or at least discount off the ideas. However, when under the disguise of the attractive name of “progressive”, it becomes palatable. “How can we reject a Christianity that is progressive? Progress is always good isn’t it?”
