132 – What happens after Easter?
Do we just go on with our lives as if nothing special has happened?
All too often, we get busy with family activities, projects at work, planting the garden, planning a vacation. The list goes on and on.
In and of themselves, these activities are probably good and needed.
But honestly, how much do we continue to remember and be inspired by the resurrection two, three, or six months after Easter?
In this week's episode, I talk about
Jesus did not want any of his disciples to carry around the guilt and shame they may have felt because of how they fell asleep when he asked them to pray, abandoned him when the Romans arrested him, or like Peter, denied he even knew him.
Jesus wanted them to be drop this mental baggage so they could get on with the business at hand, preaching the gospel to all mankind.
If you had been there for the morning meal with Jesus on the shore of the Sea of Galilee (see John 21) he would have looked into your heart and tenderly flooded you with so much love, you couldn’t possibly hold onto any feelings of doubt, fear, unworthiness, guilt, or whatever else it might be that would keep you from fulfilling your spiritual purpose in life.
This is true today just as it was almost 2,000 years ago. Christ tenderly comes to your heart and floods it with love so powerful that you can’t help but let go of the hurts, the doubts, the fears, the insecurities, or the pride – all the negative and egotistical self-talk we take part in.
Christ keeps pouring in love until you are spiritually baptized and every thing and thought unlike God in your life is washed away.
This may begin with a moment. But it will continue for a lifetime.
Jesus’s resurrection is not a one-time event that happened centuries ago. It is continuous, ongoing manifestation of the power of life over death, good over evil, and love over hate.
In that sense, there is no “after” the resurrection, because it is always taking place. So maybe we need to change the question from “What do we do after the resurrection?” to “How can we participate in the ongoing resurrection of Christ in our lives and in the world?”

131 – Jesus's resurrection is the reason we celebrate Easter
Easter is here in just a few days, but Jesus’s resurrection is hopefully not an event we remember only once a year.
As I’ve been pondering what Easter is all about over the last few weeks, I keep coming back to the resurrection and why it’s so important.
During most of the year, many Christians focus on Jesus’s death on the cross as the most significant thing Jesus did for our salvation.
And then at Easter time, they talk about the fact that Jesus is risen. Then, a week or so after Easter, they go back to talking mostly about Jesus’s crucifixion.
But frankly, I think we need to focus more on the resurrection all year long. If Jesus had not been victorious over death through his resurrection, there would not be much if anything to celebrate.
"And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins." 1 Corinthians 15:17 NLT
That says a lot!
In this week's episode, I talk about Jesus's resurrection:
This verse from Colossians always inspires me and reminds me where to keep my focus.
"Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand." Colossians 3:1 NLT
Jesus constantly set his “sights on the realities of heaven.” He could see that the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
The more we bear witness to this fact, the more we will see the risen Christ and the more we will experience his resurrection and our resurrection in our lives today.

130 – Are you using your spiritual gifts?
This week I talk with Laura Padgett about using your spiritual gifts.
We talk about Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth, where he discusses the spiritual gifts given to us by God.
1 Corinthians 12:4-11 NLT
4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all.
5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.
6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.
7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.
9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing.
10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.
11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
Laura shares some of the lessons she’s learned over the years in discovering and using her gifts.
She points out that the list of gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians is not exhaustive. There are many gifts which aren’t included here, but are still just as much given by God and designed to glorify Him as we accept and use them.
Many ears ago Laura discovered one of her most important gifts is dance. She had danced for years in the secular world, but when she and a friend were at a women’s conference, she was inspired by the time set aside for sacred dance associated with worshiping God.
It opened up a whole new way for her to worship God and use the gift of dance He had given her.
Here are a few of the questions I asked Laura:
Laura emphasized how important it is not to compare your gifts and talents to others’.
Everyone has spiritual gifts, abilities, and talents, from God. The best way to thank God is to use the gifts He has given you. In the process you will bless others and you will also be blessed.

129 – Are you worshiping God in spirit and truth?
What does that even mean?
In this week's episode, I take a look at Jesus's conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. (See John, chapter 4)
Jesus said things to her that he said to no one else that we know of. He cut right to the heart of what true worship is when he said, "The true worshipers must worship the Father in spirit and in truth." John 4:23
True worship is not about what motions your body goes through, the words you say, the ceremonies and rituals you participate in.
True worship is about what's going on in your heart.
It’s a spiritual experience honoring, acknowledging, and humbling yourself with God.
Some churches have lots of rituals and ceremonies in their worship services. Others have fewer.
But the human mind can make a ritual out of anything, like always sitting in the same seat at church, without even thinking about it. I am so guilty of that at times. But I must say, there have been many times when I have asked God where to sit during church, and it made all the difference as to who I met or talked to afterwards, and the blessings that came as result.
And have you ever listened to how you say the Lord’s Prayer? Sometimes it sounds like a race to get to the end. Other times it can sound more like a list of things to get at the grocery store. We are so familiar with the words, we’re just repeating them and not plumbing their depths spiritually.
When we just go through the motions or repeat the words at church, and there is little or no inspiration, we’re not really worshiping God.
True worship
Ways to worship in spirit and truth
Be fresh in your prayers. Be inspired in the way you worship God.
When we go through the outward motions of worship with rituals, ceremonies, or whatever form it might take, the human mind may be satisfied and think it has worshiped God. But we are no different than we were before
True, spiritual worship transforms us. We are more spiritual. We are more loving.
The more we worship in spirit and in truth, the more we will experience God’s presence and love in our own lives and the more others will feel this love.

128 – Have you ever stopped to ask why church is important?
There is a big shift taking place with church-going people. There has been an exodus from many churches for all kinds of reasons:
The question is: Who runs your church?
People and strong personalities OR the Holy Spirit?
In this week's episode I talk about two times in the Bible when decisions were made by the church which are perfect examples for us.
There was no church politics or one person who made these decisions.
We need to cultivate our direct relationship with God through Christ and be moved by the Holy Spirit directly instead of just copying what Paul or Jesus said without embracing the underlying spiritual essence of their message.
When a church doesn't let the Spirit guide it, the leadership as well as the membership, can become legalistic it is just focused on the letter of the law.
Paul says this kills a church. How is your church doing on this?
The final question: Who is building your church?
People, doctrine, and personal opinions OR Christ?

127 – What does the Bible have to say about spring cleaning?
My wife came across this verse in Psalms and it’s what really prompted our efforts to de-clutter.
I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. Psalms 101:2 KJV
It's really what inspired us to want to do some serious spring cleaning a few weeks ago.
I got to wondering if there was anything in the Bible about spring cleaning, accumulating and getting rid of clutter or things that were no longer needed.
As it turns out the Bible has some very helpful insights about getting rid of things that are no longer needed or useful.
Here are some of the things I discuss:
The spring cleaning of your house is only a metaphor for the mental and spiritual spring cleaning that takes place in your heart when you put God first in your life.

126 – Nothing can ever separate you from God
Have you ever heard someone say, "Sin separates us from God?"
This idea goes all the way back to the story of Adam and Eve when they got kicked out of the Garden of Eden.
And it shows up lots of places in the Bible.
For example in Isaiah:
Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. Isaiah 59:1, 2
And in the New Testament, the man who had been born blind and was healed by Jesus, tells the Pharisees, "We know God doesn't listen to sinners." (John 9:31 NLT)
But if God doesn't listen to sinners, we are all in trouble.
Fortunately, the Bible also gives lots of examples when God does listen to sinners, proving that we are not separated from Him, even when we make mistakes or something bad happens.
Kind David, who committed some pretty serious sins, could still say in Psalms:
Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?”
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, [Sheol] behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139:7-10
David knew he could never be separated from God.
What Isaiah and others are saying is that when you sin, you feel separated from God, but David reassures us that God is still with us, whatever the circumstances.
To get at the heart of this issue, we need to understand the nature of God.
The prophet Jeremiah records God revealing that He is everywhere. (See Jeremiah 23:23, 24)
Since God is everywhere, there is no place you can go where God is not already present. The more we grasp this, the more we will understand that we can never be separated from God.
In this episode, I also talk about
My prayer for you is that you embrace you unbreakable relationship with God.

125 – Do our prayers to end war do any good?
This past week, we’ve heard the news that Russia has invaded Ukraine. Tensions had been mounting for quite some time. But diplomatic efforts were not effective in stopping the onslaught of war. People all over the world are offering prayers to end this war.
I believe these prayers will help resolve the problem.
If you’re reading this (or listening to this podcast) the day it's published, I realize things are developing quickly in Ukraine and I may not have the latest information since I wrote this several days ago.
If you're reading this at a later time, some of the ideas I share may or may not still seem relevant, but my goal here is to offer some encouragement and ideas on how our prayers to end war can be effective.
In this week's episode of The Bible Speaks to You Podcast, I look at several examples in the Bible when prayer helped avert war and destruction by a military power.
The stories we discuss are
I share some ways to pray about resolving conflicts, whether it's war between family members, church members, political parties, or countries.
And here's my question for you. How do you think Christ Jesus would mediate the tensions between Ukraine and Russia?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. And I'd love to hear how you pray to bring war to an end.

124 – The Bible is full of stories explaining that God is not a respecter of persons
When I was in college I had a professor who had a couple of favorites in class. I was definitely not one of them. In fact, it seemed she didn't really like me at all.
I asked a friend to pray with me about the situation. My friend said I needed to start with the fact that God loved the professor just as much as He loved me.
That's not what I wanted to hear, but it's what I needed to hear.
The more I prayed this way, the more the professor began to show me more respect.
It was an important lesson for me and started me on the journey of discovering that God loves everyone equally and does not show partiality. God is not a respecter of persons.
There are many verses in the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments, that bring this out, as well as explaining that we should not show partiality in our judgements either.
There is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons. 2 Chronicles 19:7
For God does not show favoritism. Romans 2:11
One of the best stories to bring this out is found in Acts, chapters 10 and 11. It's about a Roman Centurion, Cornelius who hears an angel tell him to send for Peter.
God prepares Peter's heart to share the gospel of Christ with Cornelius, even though he is a Gentile.
Cornelius, his friends and family all accept Christ and receive the Holy Spirit, to the astonishment of the Jews who have come with Peter.
To hear more of the story, listen to this week's episode.
This is a pivotal event in the history of the early Christian church. Peter, first, then the whole church, had a mindset shift from thinking their faith was for a select few to realizing the gospel of Christ was for the whole world.
What if our churches today were paying more attention to what the Holy Spirit was telling us instead of listening to what other people are saying?
Do you ever express partiality to one type of visitor at church over another because of what they're wearing, how wealthy they seem to be, and how fancy a car they drive? Do you ever ignore the person who is dressed in dirty jeans and has a sad face?
Everyone needs to be greeted with the same, unconditional love--or you are being a respecter of persons.
It takes a lot of humility to recognize when we are not being impartial. But with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can do it.
Please make a special effort to express God’s unconditional, universal love to everyone equally, regardless of who they are, where they’re from, and all those other things we judge people by.
God is not a respecter of persons. And as God’s children, we should not be either.
You have that impartial love of God in your heart for all mankind. Just love everyone with it.

123-It's easy to say the words, but it's still true. You are loved by God.
Have you ever had those times when you felt alone, unappreciated, and unloved?
You’re trying to live your life to the best of your ability, but there are challenges that keep piling up. You pray. You study your Bible. Maybe you go to church.
You try to do what’s right. You try to be loving and helpful to others.
But you just wonder sometimes if it’s all worth it. Does your life even add up to anything?
Does God really care about you and actually hear your prayers? Does your life even matter?
I have certainly had times like that in my life.
Once, many years ago, when I was really down on myself I found a passage in the book of Daniel, chapters 9 & 10, that was really helpful and brought me hope.
Daniel is praying and fasting. In fact, he is repenting for his personal sins as well as the sins of the Children of Israel. They had worshiped idols and disobeyed God over many years. And now they were in captivity in Babylon.
Right when Daniel was repenting, the angel Gabriel appeared to reassure Daniel that God loves him.
And just in case Daniel might have doubted God had heard his prayers, the angel tells Daniel that from the very first day he had prayed to get his heart right with God, God had heard his prayers.
I found that very reassuring. I suddenly felt that from the very first time I had ever prayed, God knew what was in my heart and that He heard my prayers. I felt seen and known. I felt loved.
This is true for you too!
God sees you. He hears your prayers. You are dearly loved by God.
What can we learn from Daniels’s situation? Have you ever felt like you were in captivity to a problem, either because of your own or someone else’s disobedience to God?
That is the time to pray and repent. Every time I read chapters 9 and 10 of Daniel, I marvel that Daniel does not just repent for his own sins. He repents for all the sins of all the Children of Israel.
How often have you or I done that? Honestly, I usually have enough to repent just of my own mistakes. Why should I repent for things I didn’t do?
But I have come to realize that I can repent for all the sins committed by the Christian church throughout history.
It’s very easy if you have not committed those sins, to think you are better than those who do commit them. And it’s often easier to see someone else’s sins than it is to see your own.
So, I would like to invite you to join me in a prayer of repentance, not just for what you have done wrong, but also for what the entire Christian church has done wrong throughout the ages.
But what does repentance have to do with feeling God's love?
God always loves you dearly. But if you are holding onto your own sins or resentful of others’ sins, you won’t hear God’s voice.
Repentance clears the air, so to speak, so you can hear God telling you how dearly you are loved.
And don’t be surprised when you pray this prayer of Daniel, when the angel of God comes to you, strengthens you, and says, "Oh child of the Most High, you are dearly loved by God."
