It’s hard to believe, but in the early 90s, the Sega Genesis dominated Nintendo’s NES and even the SNES for a number of years based on pure guts, bravado, great salesmanship, and unbridled enthusiasm in marketing and branding. However, Nintendo’s slower but steadier old-school and even conservative approach ultimately won out in spectacular fashion, which was nevertheless accelerated by the meddling and infighting within Sega of Japan. Ethan aka El_Fedorable and I have a wide-ranging discussion about the history of video games that takes CONSOLE WARS as its starting point and leads to a wider talk about our own history of gaming and what the future holds for Nintendo as well as more recent rivals Sony and Microsoft. I can’t recommend this book highly enough — and the audiobook is one of the best I’ve ever listened to — and the fact that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have optioned the book for a film should tell you how surprisingly gripping and epic this tale of two titans is.
