September 19, 2025Community ConnectionsSend us a textHave you ever rediscovered a passion you thought was long forgotten? That's exactly what happened when I stepped into the Blackwood Community Centre for a cooking class—my first since school days. The simple joy of chopping vegetables for a Greek salad and learning to prepare chicken dishes rekindled something I'd been missing for years.Community centres in Adelaide, supported by the wonderful Mitchell Council, are creating spaces where people connect in meaningful ways. These aren't just buildings—they're vibrant hubs where lives intersect and new skills blossom. The recently opened Pasadena Community Centre exemplifies this spirit with its incredible range of activities for all ages and abilities. From the exhilarating Tuesday evening Zumba "Fun Mix" classes to the Monday "Fun and Fitness" sessions combining drum balls, dancing, and yoga meditation, there's something for everyone. The best part? These activities are completely free, making community engagement accessible to all. What makes these community spaces truly special is their inclusivity. Whether you're a primary school student or enjoying retirement, whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting your wellness journey, you're welcomed with open arms. As someone who volunteers as a basketball coach, I've witnessed firsthand how community involvement enriches lives on both sides of the equation. When we put our time and heart into what we do, something magical happens—we build connections that sustain us.The Community Show will continue bringing you weekly updates about local activities worth trying. Meanwhile, stay tuned for exciting upcoming episodes including the BJ Show 2025 award show, bowling updates, AFLW coverage, NBA opening, and our milestone 250th episode celebration. September 16, 2025From Ballet to Boot Scoot: One Hour That Will Change Your WeekSend us a textMeet Susie, a dynamo who's turning 80 but refuses to slow down. Together with her son Russ, she's revolutionised fitness at the Blackwood Community Centre with a program that breaks all the rules of traditional exercise classes. What makes Susie's Fun & Fitness program unique? It's the constant variety – seven different exercise genres packed into a single hour. "If you aren't keen on ballet or drum fit, if you wait 10 minutes, the program changes," she explains. This brilliant approach ensures everyone finds something they love, whether they're in their 30s or their 90s. From drumsticks and actual drums for cardio, to ballet exercises at an outdoor barre, to boot scoot dancing with sequined trilby hats – the program constantly evolves to keep participants engaged, challenged, and smiling.Drawing on her 40-year nursing career and lifetime of dance teaching, Susie creates a safe, supportive environment where fitness feels like play. The program has grown from 20 to nearly 50 regular participants who not only strengthen their bodies but form lasting friendships. After each Monday session, the Mitcham Council provides free lunch, extending the community-building aspect beyond exercise. This holistic approach has even inspired spin-off groups, like Dee Nolan's Thursday Qigong sessions. What began as Susie's way of "giving back" has become a profound source of joy for everyone involved. "I didn't realise how much by giving something to the community, how much Russ and I get back," she shares. Join this vibrant community every Monday at 11am – no cost, no pressure, just bring a mat for the final yoga section and prepare to discover that fitness can be fun at any age.Support the show...more19minPlay
