For this episode, we will be continuing the theme set by the interview with Dr. Cleveland and her book The Black Madonna: Icon of Resistance and Nourisher of Souls. It is a bit long , but I am feeling moved by current events and also how The Black Madonna is a nourisher of souls especially during difficult times. even when they have been destroyed as the Madonnas were during the French Revolution, the are reborn so to speak. In our times of great trial, I hope we can all join together so as to imagine and then create a new cultural impulse that can heal the wounds being inflicted during our times.

On May 15, 2026 a remarkable document was released from the Vatican under the auspices of Pope Leo XIV. It is called Magnifica Humanitas, the Magnificent Human and is all about how the emerging dominance of technology needs to have a moral counter as well as an approach that maintains human dignity and rights. It got me a thinking as they say, as I feel that while I enjoy and utilize many of the modern technological wonders of our era, there are obvious dangers if it is not encountered in a moral and conscious way. With my research on The Black Madonna as well as The Virgin of Guadalupe, I felt that these images and their narratives have much to offer in the spirit of Magnifica Humanitas. August will feature several Black Madonnas in this theme. This is the first podcast introduces the subject.
