This week, Cerita Ibrahim and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about the truth about trauma – what it actually is, why it is unhealthy to not recognize them, and the danger of pushing them way down our subconscious minds. Learn why we should not allow our “filters” to control us.

[02:45] Trauma is everywhere
In any relationship we experience, there is some kind of trauma involved. We think traumas are all huge, but then there are also insidious experiences that happen over time. Trauma, in its essence, means “a deep emotional wound”. It is not about what happens TO you, it is about what happens INSIDE of you, as a result of your experiences. The big T traumas can be abuse, experience in a natural disaster, or neglect. Although, what happens inside us remains the same, whether we experience Capital T traumas or emotional neglect. Understanding this will help us learn why we struggle in our relationships.
[04:45] How trauma can be experienced
Trauma is not limited to what was done to us. Rather, it is something we experience, witness, or something that directly happens to us. 9/11 can be very traumatic even to those who are not physically in New York. There are so many iterations of how trauma can be experienced that will dictate the way we relate with people, especially in our relationships.
[15:00] How trauma is expressed (men vs. women)
How trauma is expressed looks different in men versus in women. Men may need to look into doing more personal development. Connecting to our emotions can also be difficult, especially when we push them down for so long. This can cause us to even question what type of emotion is in there. Is it sadness? Fear? Or Anger? This is why it is important for our men to normalize doing personal development work.
[23:30] Creating a personal glass ceiling
When we allow our trauma to continue to fester and we do not look at it, we create our own personal glass ceiling. We can be successful, it’s not that we can’t, but there will always be a barrier that we keep hitting. And we would wonder why we could not get past that point. The truth is there is something else that is causing that personal glass ceiling that is keeping us from allowing ourselves to fully enjoy our life – the abundance of life.
