October 18, 1871 - it is known that Nina Craigmiles was riding in a buggy with her grandfather when it was struck by a train. Dr. Gideon Thompson was apparently ejected from the buggy upon impact and survived. Seven-year-old Nina did not. She was crushed beneath the cow-catcher, the v-shaped part of the front of the train to push aside obstacles, and died instantly.
