The Book Is Better - Book to Film Adaptation Reviews

Look, we keep trying to record an episode about Pitch Perfect, but if we're being honest, it's just SO hard to read... So we did this instead!

Listen to our very first episode reviewing some of the "best adaptations" lists online. We rant a bit, but it's (hopefully) all in good fun.

Featuring hosts Tim Haynes, Donna Haynes, Rebekah Edwards, and T. Josiah Haynes.

This universe now spans an incredible 10 movies... so how do the 1968 and 2001 films, roughly based on the classic French book by Pierre Boulle, line up?

We say 'roughly' because... let's just say they used the book as *inspiration* and not so much as *canon*. Spoiler alert: Josiah goes on some rants in this episode.

Spoiler alert: The Martian is (collectively) one of our favorites! Book, movie, whatever... we're obsessed.

Our family of 4 covers the major changes the filmmakers and writers made from book to movie, including which ones we liked best and the ones we thought were... meh.

This is one of those episodes where we (poorly) contain our disdain for... Well, I guess you must listen to find out!

We chat about how we felt about Rick Riordan's middle-grade book and the film and new Disney+ show inspired by it. (We get #saucy, but it's all in good fun.)

We're breaking from the norm today and discussing the film that's based, in one way or another, on maybe more books than any other movie in history! Join us as we review the 2023 D&D film and nerd out about races, classes, magical items, and more!

Jaws was one of the most successful debut novels in history, and its film successor literally invented the summer blockbuster. So... how does this classic adaptation hold up? Was the book the better work, despite the continued fame of the film?

As the book celebrates 50 years (we all threw up a little when we read that), the family discusses our thoughts on the incredible quality of the film after so many decades and why we, like Peter Benchley, were definitely rooting for the shark during our read.

Dune: Part Two was, maybe, the cinematic event of 2024. We discuss our feelings about Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of the final half of Frank Herbert's book and (a little bit about) how it compares to the 1984 film adaptation.

Trivia question to consider before listening: Can you name the 5 Oscar-nominated or Oscar-winning actors noted in the full cast list?

This modern hit of a movie was based on the cult classic sci-fi novel, Dune — did Denis Villeneuve nail the adaptation? How does 2021's Dune: Part One compare to 1984's Dune? (Hint: One of them was super weird...)

The family discusses our thoughts on both adaptations and our excitement in preparation for Part Two releasing in just a week!

How does Ernest Cline's futuristic and dystopian 1980s love letter compare to the 2018 film adaptation? (Hint: there's so much different that it's like experiencing a whole new story.)

We compare Ready Player One's film to the book that inspired it and maybe include a bit of trivia along the way. Do you agree with our final verdicts?
