The Book of Esther (Hebrew אסתר; Greek Ἐσθήρ; Latin Esther) is a text contained in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible.
It was originally written in Hebrew and, according to the hypothesis most shared by scholars, its final editing, by unknown authors, is located towards the end of the second century BC in Mesopotamia, possibly in Babylon.
It consists of 10 chapters, which tell the story of the Hebrew Esther, an orphan girl, cousin of Mordecai (Est 2:15), who becomes the wife of the Persian king Ahasuerus (fifth century BC) and saves the Jewish people from the plots of the evil Aman.
