  • The Notting Hill Mystery by Charles Warren Adams ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]
The Notting Hill Mystery by Charles Warren Adams audiobook. Genre: mystery Charles Felix was the pseudonym of Charles Warren Adams, an English Lawyer and publisher and is now known to have been the author of 'The Notting Hill Mystery', thought to be the first full length detective novel in English. The story first appeared as an eight part serial in a weekly magazine in 1862, and was subsequently published as a single volume novel in 1865. The story deals with the then newly emerging field of 'mesmerism' which we now know as hypnotism, and its use in the planning and execution of three truly devious crimes. The novel, unusually, is written wholly in the form of a series of letters and reports gathered by the investigator from the various witnesses in the case, and the reader is left to decide themselves the guilt or otherwise of the chief suspect. • The Early Tudors - Henry VII and Henry VIII by Charles Edward Moberly ~ Full Audiobook [history]
The Early Tudors - Henry VII and Henry VIII by Charles Edward Moberly audiobook. Genre: history In The Early Tudors - Henry VII and Henry VIII, historian and educator Charles Edward Moberly guides listeners from the battered aftermath of the Wars of the Roses into the hard-edged rise of Tudor power. Beginning with Henry VII, Moberly traces how a new dynasty steadies a divided realm through careful statecraft, the management of rivals, and the slow tightening of royal authority. The narrative then turns to Henry VIII, whose appetite for magnificence, war, and decisive personal rule pulls England onto a far larger stage. Along the way, the book keeps one eye on court and council chambers and the other on Europe: shifting alliances, the rivalry of France and the Habsburg empire, the pressures of the papacy, and the wider contest for influence in Italy. As religious debate deepens across the continent, England's internal politics become inseparable from questions of faith, legitimacy, and national direction. Clear, compact, and rich in context, Moberly's account is both a portrait of two striking rulers and a study of how a centralized monarchy takes shape in a rapidly changing world. • The Case of Miss Elliott by Baroness Emma Orczy ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]
The Case of Miss Elliott by Baroness Emma Orczy audiobook. Genre: mystery In Edwardian London, crimes that stump Scotland Yard become tea-room talk in an ABC shop off the Strand. There, a mild, unassuming figure known only as the Old Man in the Corner sits with a cup of tea, a length of string, and a talent for seeing what everyone else misses. When a sharp young journalist, often identified as Polly Burton, brings him fresh newspaper accounts and courtroom gossip, he listens, asks a few disarming questions, and then patiently reconstructs the truth from motive, timing, and the smallest contradictions. The Case of Miss Elliott gathers twelve of Baroness Emma Orczy's early detective tales, each built around a seemingly impossible puzzle: a death in a quiet Maida Vale street that raises the question of murder or suicide, a prized racehorse targeted by an insidious plot, stolen jewels in a high-society house full of guests, baffling disappearances, and scandals that ripple through drawing rooms and docks alike. As Polly tests his conclusions and bristles at his certainty, the Old Man spins elegant solutions that expose greed, desperation, and the fragile masks of respectability - all without leaving his chair. • The Artist by B. F. Gandee ~ Full Audiobook [self help]
The Artist by B. F. Gandee audiobook. Genre: self help First published in 1835, The Artist by B. F. Gandee is an art manual disguised as a friendly lesson book, inviting listeners into the drawing room where technique is taught through conversation, encouragement, and careful practice. The guide follows Charlotte as she tutors her cousin Ellen, moving step by step from foundational habits of hand and eye to the ornamental styles that fascinated early Victorian makers. Along the way, Gandee explains how to plan, prepare, and execute a variety of period methods, including Grecian painting, Japan painting, oriental tinting, mezzotinting, transferring, and inlaying, with practical advice on materials, surfaces, and common pitfalls. The instruction is geared toward creating decorative work that could be displayed at home or turned into attractive objects for bazaars and fancy fairs, making the book both a snapshot of nineteenth-century taste and a usable set of lessons for patient beginners. • The Case of the Lamp That Went Out by Auguste Groner ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]
The Case of the Lamp That Went Out by Auguste Groner audiobook. Genre: mystery In late-19th-century Vienna, an ordinary morning turns grim when a milk girl, Anna, discovers the body of a well-dressed man in an empty lot. With no clear witnesses and only a handful of puzzling traces, the case is handed to Joseph Muller, a quiet, dutiful member of the Imperial Austrian police whose unassuming manner hides a razor-sharp talent for reading people and details. As officialdom pressures the investigation toward easy answers, Muller follows a subtler trail: a nervous woman glimpsed at a garden gate, a household full of guarded servants, and a strange recollection from a night watchman - a red-shaded lamp in an upstairs window that was not simply blown out by the wind, but deliberately extinguished by a human hand. The vanished light becomes a doorway into a tangle of respectability, secrecy, and motive, where every polite conversation seems to conceal a fear, and every object in a room may be a message. Patient, methodical, and quietly stubborn, Muller must separate coincidence from design before the truth disappears into Vienna's shadows. • Guy Garrick by Arthur B. Reeve ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]
Guy Garrick by Arthur B. Reeve audiobook. Genre: mystery In early twentieth-century New York, private detective Guy Garrick makes his name by treating crime like a laboratory problem. With his loyal friend and assistant Tom Marshall at his side, Garrick is pulled into a baffling case that begins with a rich young man, Mortimer Warrington, reporting the theft of his prized automobile and quickly escalates into violence, intimidation, and a trail of clues that suggest the robbery is only the surface of something far bigger. As the police and an insurance investigator struggle to keep pace with a fast-moving underworld, Garrick applies emerging forensic methods and ingenious devices to test evidence, trace hidden connections, and expose the mechanisms of a motor-driven criminal ring. The investigation leads from respectable drawing rooms to backroom gambling, blackmail, and official corruption, where every witness seems compromised and every lead may be a trap.
