McAlpine has been around for a while and he has photographed a lot of music history including artists such as Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and Aerosmith, and even contemporary acts such as Blondie and Wet Leg. His work has been aquired by a number of museums including the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, MFA Boston, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

This week we are sitting down with friend of the show, Spencer Lajoye. According to their website, Spencer is a folk/pop singer songwriter, violinist, and vocal loop artist in Boston, MA, who believes everyone is made of the good stuff. They make music to tell the truth and return to their body as a queer person in recovery from American Christian evangelicalism. Delivering Broadway-esque melodies accompanied by a weathered dreadnought, their performances are equal parts confident quirk and elegant storytelling.

This week’s installment is with Touching Roots Curator and Professor of African American studies at Emory University, Kyrah Malika Daniels. Kyrah’s research interest is on comparative religion, art history and material culture, and ritual healing traditions in the Black Atlantic, with focus on sacred arts and ritual healing practices among Haitian and Congolese communities. We had a really interesting conversation, which we’re super happy to present to you now.

Kyrah is currently completing a book titled Art of the Healing Gods: Illness, Imbalance & Sacred Arts of the Black Atlantic described in her bio as “a comparative religion project that examines ritual art traditions and religious healing legacies of Kongo-derived communities in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The book investigates how sacred art objects mediate relationships between humans and spirits in healing ceremonies to treat spiritual illness and imbalance holistically.

Kyrah's work has also been published in the Journal of Africana Religions, Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism, the Journal of Haitian Studies, and the Journal for the American Academy of Religion.

Hey guys, Theo and Brian here to provide some quick context for the upcoming episode. What you’re about to listen to is the fifth segment in a seven part interview series we recorded this fall about an exhibition that is currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The exhibition is titled “Touching Roots, Black Ancestral Legacies in the Americas”, and it is located on the third floor of the Art of the Americas wing in the MFA.

This exhibition is included with general admission, so there is no extra cost to see it, and we highly recommend you check it out.

This week’s installment is with Boston Artist, Stephen Hamilton. According to Stephen’s website, “his Work incorporates both Western and African techniques, blending figurative painting and drawing with resist dyeing, weaving, and woodcarving. Each image is a marriage between the aesthetic perspectives and artistry of both traditions. This forms a body of work, which serves as a conceptual and visual bridge between the ancient and modern worlds. Through this, he explores elements of black identity through time and space on its own terms.

We were able to talk to seven of the curators and artists involved in the exhibition, and for the sake of clarity, we are going to release these in chronological order, so you can learn with us. Thanks for tuning in, and enjoy the show.
