The theme is Opposite Sides. Jacob’s family becomes more devoted to God’s covenant by purifying themselves and rejecting idols, while Esau and his descendants move away from the covenant and ally themselves with ungodly nations. This chapter demonstrates separation—not merely physical but spiritual—between those who follow God and those who reject Him. The story urges us to evaluate which side we are on: God’s side or the world’s side.

Not a single one of us is deserving of a single crumb from the Lord’s table. He’s perfect and full of selfless love and grace, and we are full of selfish pride, greed, lust, and ambition for power. We’re consumed with these sinful attitudes and desires and are unworthy of our Creator’s presence. Yet, as Pastor Chris will point out in today’s message, because of Jesus, God has made a place for us at His table, considering us as His Children and no longer enemies or dogs undeserving of His fellowship.
Today, Pastor Jack teaches that the people of Israel eventually begin to understand the high cost of wanting a king. But, quick fixes rarely end well, and choosing to follow only God would have been the answer.
