Matt and Nick begin this week's episode by giving kudos to AFC Croydon who beat Sittingbourne FC in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.
There's also talk about the Transfer Window with the lads mulling over, amongst others, the proposed moves of Tyrique George to Fulham from Chelsea. Although the chaps thought it was a done deal, it did not go through just like Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi to Liverpool.
Chelsea's 2-0 victory against Fulham, which was dominated by video technology controversy, proves to be the inspiration behind this week's question which is: "is there still a place for VAR in football?"
Nick believes its here to stay, but thinks that the Premier League would benefit from how the technology was used in the recent Africa Cup of Nations. He is also adamant that the officials should be held more accountable for VAR led decisions that end up being wrong.
Matt draws on an article from the New Scientist, (originally published on the November the 23rd 2024), and which was written by Daisy Christodoulou. "It's Not Football Any More" questions the game's new obsession with accuracy and wonders whether this ultimately ruins the sport loved by so many around the world. It also discusses the arduous road of perfecting measurement and the potential role of AI when it comes to refereeing decisions.
