The strike has primarily revolved around several key issues:

Music in America has witnessed a remarkable takeover of the Billboard charts by the country music genre. KOP investigates the phenomenon.
Unlike any other season in recent memory, and perhaps unprecedented in Hot 100 history, the music landscape is currently dominated by the heartfelt twang and emotional storytelling of country artists.
From established names like Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, and Jason Aldean to emerging talents like Oliver Anthony Music, the country genre has firmly held its ground on the top spots of the chart throughout the entire season.
However, amidst this country surge, the charts have still resonated with the pop power of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, hip-hop hits from Gunna and Toosii, and global rhythms from Rema & Selena Gomez, Fifty Fifty, and Eslabon Armado & Peso Pluma.
From the HilltopOnline "On May 2, after six weeks of failed negotiations, the Writers Guild of America (WGA), representing 11,500 writers of film, television and other entertainment forms, went on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), the collective bargaining group that represents major Hollywood studios and streamers such as Amazon, Apple, Disney, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros.
Among the labor disputes between the two parties are contractual concerns, the film industry’s adaptation to inflation, equitable profit distribution, as well as proper residual payments and protection against Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage and influence in film and streaming.
Following the first two months of the writer’s strike, on July 17, the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), the entertainment industry’s largest union, which represents 160,000 actors and performers, joined the WGA on strike marking the first time in 63 years both the SAG-AFTRA and WGA unions have simultaneously been on strike
The television and film writers’ strike has passed the 100-day mark and the WGA and television producers have yet to agree on a new contract. The WGA plans to remain “resolved and united” amidst the largest interruption to the American television and film industries since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2023 Writers Guild Strike rules prohibit members from meeting or negotiating with a struck company (a company represented by AMPTP) and prevent writing services and the sale of literary material.
The rules also extend to mediums such as animation and fiction podcasts covered by the WGA and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. Other literary representatives, such as lawyers and agents, are also prohibited from negotiating new, pending or future deals on projects for their WGA member clients. "

The song is the first entry on the chart for the singer-songwriter, who goes by the name Oliver Anthony Music. His other song, "Aint Gotta Dollar," debuted at number 82. The song's debut success surpassed Elvis and the Beatles.

Anthony became the first artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 without any prior chart history. He beat out Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, and Olivia Rodrigo to reach the top spot. The song is about the frustration of working-class struggles. 108 days into the writer's strike and a month into the actors strike, the studios via AMPTP are meeting at the negotiating table. KOP looks at the progress.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes are ongoing. The WGA strike has lasted three months and will continue indefinitely. The SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, 2023.
The strikes are part of broader Hollywood labor disputes. The strikes call for better pay and job security, and draw attention to disparities in the film and television industry that have grown wider in the streaming boom.
LA Times reports: "The companies, many of which are saddled with debt, could save money by cutting costly producer deals and pausing production of movies and TV shows. Industry news outlet Deadline quoted an anonymous executive who suggested that studios were ready to hold out until writers started losing their homes, which stoked outrage on picket lines.
As the negotiations resume, it’s still uncertain how much the Writers Guild of America and the studios are willing to bend to reach a compromise, or what precise shape a deal wouldtake. Sources close to the negotiations say the sides remain far apart on key issues.
But it’s become increasingly clear that the major studios and streamers, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, are motivated to end the work stoppages that have roiled Hollywood. The SAG-AFTRA actors’ union joined the WGA by going on strike last month."

Lizzo Responds to Sexual Harassment and Weight-Shaming Allegations: Saying They are ‘As Unbelievable as They Sound’. Could these accusations cause the tiki torches of cancel culture to kill Lizzo's career?
In response to the recent allegations made against her and her production company, Lizzo has addressed the situation with a heartfelt statement. Expressing her feelings of disappointment and difficulty in recent days, she emphasized that her work ethic, morals, and respectfulness have been unfairly questioned. Despite usually choosing not to respond to false accusations, Lizzo deemed these claims unbelievable and too outrageous to ignore.
Lizzo asserted that the allegations come from former employees who had already admitted to being informed about their inappropriate and unprofessional behavior while on tour. As an artist, she stated her unwavering passion for her craft and her commitment to delivering the best art that represents both her and her fans. She acknowledged that this passion sometimes leads to tough decisions, but she never intended to make anyone on her team feel uncomfortable or undervalued.
The artist expressed that she does not seek to be seen as a victim in this situation but emphasized that she is not the villain either. She candidly stated that she is open about her sexuality and self-expression, but she refuses to let others misinterpret this as an opportunity to paint her in a false light. Lizzo believes in the importance of women's respect and empowerment and emphasized that she would never body shame or mistreat an employee based on their weight.
