Last month I had the opportunity to check out up and coming Oklahoma based songwriter, Parker Millsap. He played in my hometown nonetheless. Parker’s debut album on Thirty Tigers is one of my favorite records of the year so far, so I was very excited to get to see him live. Parker was kind enough to sit down with me prior to the show and record this podcast where we talk about playing in bars in Oklahoma at a young age, getting the opportunity to play at the Ryman and many other things.

I’d like to take a second to mention The Covered Bridge Music Series in Lancaster, Ohio. Spearheaded by Steven Wells and the folks from Ohio University Lancaster and the Lancaster Festival, they are working very hard to bring talented songwriters in to play in our community. This is a task and goal, I myself have been trying to do and promote for years and it is great that this organization is highlighting some great musicians. This show was actually held as a fundraiser for the concert series in a downtown bank. The atmosphere and the sound was amazing, it was extremely well done and it was great to see so many people out to help support such a fantastic cause.

Last month I sat down with The Broken Jukebox favorite, Graham Weber at Natalie’s in Columbus shortly after a CBG Band show, his project with fellow Texas based songwriters Bonnie Whitmore and Collin Gilmore. A few weeks ago, I got to take in a CBG Band show at Natalie’s in Columbus. Before the show I  had the pleasure of sitting down with each of the three songwriters from the group to record separate podcasts. This is the second of those three with the very talented, Bonnie Whitmore. Bonnie I discuss flying planes, her family band, and she corrects me on who sang with Hayes Carll on “Another Like You” among many other things and she played a couple great songs including an unreleased track to open the show.

A couple weeks ago, I got the chance to head up to the Rumba Cafe in Columbus to see Drivin N’ Cryin. Columbus native, Aaaron Lee Tasjan is currently playing lead guitar in the band as well as continuing his excellent solo career. Aaron was kind enough to sit down and have a chat with me prior to the show and play a few tunes as well. We talked about his latest ep Crooked River Burning, meeting and playing with Kevn Kinney, and many other things. I apologize for the background noise throughout the show as the opening band was sound checking and we were outside so there were a few airplanes flying overhead at times.

I’ve been trying to get Lincoln Durham to come play in Columbus since his first EP was released a few years ago. The chance finally arose last weekend at the Basement. Lincoln’s live show was one of the most dynamic one man shows I have ever witnessed, alternating between approximately 900 instruments, Lincoln had the crowd rocking for all of his hour long opening set. It’s always great when something you are highly anticipating not only lives up to expectations but surpasses them by a mile.

Lincoln was gracious enough to sit down with me for about 30 minutes prior to the show and play a few songs. In addition to the songs we chatted about the direction of his newest record, being a competition fiddle player in his youth, and the feeling of drifting away from older songs. I hope you all enjoy this show as much as I did recording it. If Lincoln is near you anytime in the future I suggest you get your asses out and see him.

This past Saturday, I had the chance to sit down with singer/ songwriter, producer, Gurf Morlix. Bob and Chip had booked Gurf to play Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza and Live Music and he was nice enough to give me 20 minutes of his time prior to the show. I had a ton of questions for Gurf and probably could have recorded 3 podcasts with him if he had time, but as it were we got to talk about producing other people’s records, working with Warren Zevon, Blaze Foley and a few other things as well.
