This week we’re joined by comedian and content creator Sam Zito, a former VFL listed player who remains quietly (and loudly) confident he could’ve played AFL.

Sam talks us through his football journey at Essendon VFL, Northern Blues and Oakleigh Chargers, what it’s actually like getting cut from elite programs, and the reality gap between VFL hopefuls and AFL stars.

We also unpack how he found comedy, his first ever gigs, touring nationally, opening for big names, and why bombing early might’ve saved his career.

Add in AFL State of Origin chat, terrible sponsor pitches, local footy legends, and some all-time delusion — and you’ve got a classic Budgie Smugglers ep.

Two Comedians. Zero Credentials. All Aussie Athletes.

This week on The Budgie Smugglers, Steven Bradshaw and Jeremy Dooley return after a huge January that included deleted episodes, legal scare-offs, and accidentally becoming journalists for about 12 hours.

• Schoolyard sporting moments that live in legend
• The internet absolutely losing its mind in our comment section
• Volk becoming the Aussie Sporting GOAT

We also chat The Aussie Open, an Aussie in the Super Bowl, Cricket, Surfing, NBL Brawls & more.

As always, we don’t fact-check, we don’t apologise properly, and we absolutely read your comments.

As well as everybody's favourite regular weekly segments The Comment Section, Audience Question, Quick Hits, Big Questions, Get around us, Off Field antics, Dool’s Top 5 and Weekly Power Rankings.

*This episode has been edited from its original form for legal purposes.

This week’s episode is absolutely stacked — from huge on-field moments to the wildest off-field bombshell we’ve ever dropped.

Then it’s back to the action:

Mya Joint bows out of the Aussie Open after a straight-sets loss last week.

🏏 BBL Final Fallout
The Perth Scorchers smash the Sydney Sixers by 6 wickets in the Big Bash Final.
In classic Sydney fashion, coach Greg Shipperd blames travel for the loss.

Two Comedians. Zero Credentials. All Aussie Athletes.

Comedians Steven Bradshaw & Jeremy Dooley take a seriously lighter look at Aussie sport and athletes across the globe .

Whether an Aussie is making waves in big global leagues like NBA, F1 & UFC, or Aussies dominating in lesser mainstream covered sports like Surfing, WWE, Athletics, or right here at home in AFL, NRL & Cricket, or to the more obscure Aussie athletic accomplishments in Curling, Discus & Sheep Shearing, The Budgy Smugglers Cover it all!

This week Steve & Dool’s stick to what little they know without any deep knowledge, insight or authority on the week in Aussie Sport.

• Bree Walker finished second behind German Laura Nolte in the season-long overall monobob standings
• Scotty James won the final World Cup halfpipe before the Milan-Cortina Games.
• Sam Kerr scores twice for Chelsea in Women's FA Cup, declares her best form is not far away
• Johnny Furphy & Jock Landale lighting it up in the NBA
• Alex De Minuar says about the Australian open ‘I’m not just making up the numbers’
• Lines to get into Aus Open out of control
• Australia's Daniel Sanders has returned to the Dakar Rally less than 24 hours after suffering a broken collarbone and sternum. Sanders courageously completed the 11th stage of the race, finishing 13th.
• Steve Smith breaks a BBL record hitting 32 runs in an over
• Geraldton windsurfer Sarah Kenyon has been crowned the sport's under-18 women's world champion after a tight contest off the city's beaches.
• Australian driver Jack Doohan has parted ways with his Alpine F1 team to allow him to "pursue other career opportunities".
• Daniel Arzani’s career is set to be revived by Melbourne City in a return to the A-League that might also resurrect the playmaker’s FIFA World Cup dreams.

Two Comedians. Zero Credentials. All Aussie Athletes.

What started as a harmless Aussie sports power ranking somehow turned into an all-out comment section war with members of the Australian Olympic swimming team.

This week on The Budgie Smugglers Podcast, comedians Steven Bradshaw and Jeremy Dooley break down the most bizarre beef of our podcasting lives — how a two-week-old Instagram post triggered Olympic gold medallists, their teammates, and even a boyfriend jumping into the comments to defend honour.

We talk:

• How Aussie swimmers found our power rankings
• Why not having a swimmer in the Top 10 caused absolute meltdown
• Thin skin, thick chlorine, and keyboard toughness
• Why Australians don’t care about swimming like they used to
• The golden era of Aussie swim legends vs today
• And why arguing with comedians online is always a bad idea

Plus: bold 2026 sports predictions, Aussie sport chaos, and the usual Budgie Smugglers nonsense.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when elite athletes take comedy podcasts seriously — this episode is for you.

We also have a BIG BOLD PREDICTIONS FOR 2026!!!

Along with a quick chat about:

• Ashes Complete
• Nick Kyrious beats world number #1 Aryna Sabalenka in a “battle of the sexes” tennis match
• Oscar Piastri finishes 4th in F1 driver of the year awards as voted by the drivers
• Dyson Daniels Gets his first triple double

As always we have Dools top 5 a Predictive Power Rankings & a brand new Segment!!!!!
