  • Ep. 20: How to Get Comfortable In Front of the Camera for Recordings & Live Video Marketing - Linda Ugelow

    Video marketing can be hard.

You know you want to get your message out there & that video mediums like Instagram Stories, YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram Live are a great way to do it...

But you turn the camera on yourself and you don't look that great. Or you don't know what to say. Or any time you think you know what to say, you just get nervous, choke up, and stumble over your words while sweating on screen.

    It's nerve-wracking.

Which is why I invited Linda Ugelow to be on the show. She's a speaking and confidence coach, and is incredible at helping entrepreneurs & solopreneurs like us feel good on video, get over our fears around it, and take our marketing to the next level.

In this episode, she shares a ton of great advice and ways to get over the live video fears. In fact, some of this information is stuff she's never shared outside of her workshops before, so make sure you listen in. 👂 It's super valuable.

    What we talk about:
    • How she started working as a video coach.
    • What a 200-day crash course of going live on Periscope taught her.
    • The ah-ha moment 💡 that happened after day 75 of showing up on live video.
    • The fear of being seen that so many entrepreneurs have.
    • Her process for feeling more comfortable in front of the camera. (She tells us the steps she leads people through in her live workshops!)
    • What to do if you're having terrible acne or a bad hair day.
    • What happened when she got a bout of terrible eczema all over her eye.
    • How to know / prepare what to say before you go live.
    • A great video recording tip to allow space for cuts so it doesn't look like you're messing up (even if you are).

  • Ep. 19: Being an Entrepreneur When You Can't Work 40-Hour Weeks - Brittany Berger of Work Brighter

You want to be an entrepreneur who supports yourself financially... but what if you have a chronic illness? What if your body can't handle 40-hour work weeks, 52 weeks per year?

What if a "normal" work schedule doesn't work for you... for whatever reason?

This has been a hot topic in the Business Bitch Instagram community, which is why I was so excited to have Brittany Berger of Work Brighter on the podcast.

Brittany is someone who's dealt with different mental and physical illnesses since she was a child, and it's affected her work life, despite her drive to be a high-achiever. And after working in the startup world for a while, "grinding" her way through it all, her doctors basically told her she had no other option than to quit her job for the sake of her health.

She took some time to recover, and now she's a self-employed entrepreneur, mental health advocate, and she's obsessed with helping people like you & me, no matter what our health status is, to work brighter instead of just the outdated working "smarter" that hustle culture likes to tell us to do all the time.

This interview was incredibly enlightening for a number of reasons, so if you're someone who can't work 40 hours per week for whatever reason (or just doesn't want to work 40 hours per week because you have naps to take), I'd really encourage you to give this episode a listen and to check out the resources she mentions.

    What We Talk About:
    • The conversations I had with YOU GUYS on Instagram about setting up a business that makes you money when you can't work 40 hours per week due to illness or something else that requires energy, time, & attention.
    • How Brittany quit her full-time gig at a startup and started working for herself - she was basically forced to because of her illness.
    • Why she HAD to go the path of entrepreneurship & couldn't just go on disability.
    • Why until she had to go full-time as an entrepreneur, her side hustles were just fun & she didn't consider herself an entrepreneur.
    • Repurposing content & how that practice is SUCH a god-send for solopreneurs.
    • Working Smarter 🐴 vs. Working Brighter 🦄
    • How she's able to produce SO MUCH content for her readers, without burning herself out over too much writing time.
    • What it means to be a high-performer without subscribing to hustle culture.
    • The attention economy & how it can hurt in a quantity vs quality culture.
    • How some of the biggest worlds leaders cap their deep work at 4 hours per day.
    • Why it's key to let people know what's going on with your health and accept help.
    • Part-time hours, full-time impact.
    • Taking energy management into consideration when you're planning & her personal approach to daily energy management:
      • 1 high-energy per day
      • 1 medium-impact activity
      • low-impact items as fillers
    • Ways to get started with having better energy management for yourself.
    • How tracking her energy has helped her better-manage her illness over time too.
    • How to start choosing the productivity & self-care tools that work best for you & your own business & health goals.
    • We riff & get nerdy on automations & how they've saved our asses in business… especially when it comes to accounting. 🤓 (And why Freshbooks is SUCH a god damn life saver. 🙌)
    • Her visions for Work Brighter in the new decade as a media company.
    • Her advice for the Business Bitch community: Trust yourself more than you want to. (And know there are a lot more people there for you than you think. And accept that help. Don't refuse help, or think you have to pay for help to deserve it.)

  • Ep. 18: Start & Grow an Ecommerce Business - Luke Pearce of Radical Tea Towel

In this conversation with Luke Pearce of Radical Tea Towel, we talk about how he & his parents took an idea for a novelty product and grew it from a part-time hobby to a full-time business that's now successful in three different countries.

This episode is perfect for anyone who's wanting to get started as a product-based business owner, or who's facing the challenges of growing an ecommerce business and needs the advice of someone who's been there and done it.

    Things We Talked About:
    • How he & his parents came up with the idea for Radical Tea Towel: they wanted to buy something they couldn't find online. Having his ears open for a business idea b/c he knew he wanted to take his life in that direction, even though he enjoyed his job at the time.
    • How they took the company from being a side-project to being a full-time gig for all three of them.
      • Why he thinks it would have been helpful to have wanted their company to go full-time from the beginning, rather than just waiting to "see how it goes."
    • Leaving his job in 2014, three years after starting the company.
      • How he got the business to start generating a full-time salary for him once he quit his job & decided to focus full-time on the business.
    • The monetary challenges of growing an ecommerce business: having money tied up in stock, and needing to pre-order twice as much if/when you want to sell twice as much.
    • Finding ways to get their name out to people that were as cheap as possible.
      • Why Facebook ads were a game changer for them.
    • What Drop shipping is & why it can be an option for some ecommerce entrepreneurs, but not others.
    • Focusing on the quality of the product, whatever manufacturing model you choose.
    • How to find a good manufacturer or supplier: Google it!
    • Why you shouldn't expect the prices of your samples to be economical.
    • The challenges of minimum order quantities for small sellers.
    • Facebook ads vs. SEO & what each is and isn't good for. (And examples from our own companies.)
    • Email lists & why they work so well for ecommerce businesses.
    • How to figure out your customer demographics when you're just getting started & haven't actually collected any data yet. (Spoiler alert: you guess & just watch the data as it comes in over time.)
      • Google Analytics (Video coming soon to Business Bitch on how to install Google Analytics on your website.)
      • Facebook's Page Insights
    • How to use what you know about your demographics to reduce your targeting & be more pointed & efficient in your marketing. And/or how to trust the Facebook algorithm to figure it out for you.
    • His advice for new e-commerce business owners.
    • His advice for the Business Bitch community: DO NOT get hung up on admin.

  • Ep. 17: Legal Advice for Solopreneurs & New Business Owners - Jamie Lieberman of Hashtag Legal

I've been looking forward to doing this podcast interview, because I get SO MANY legal questions from people who would start a business, but are worried about doing things right.

Truth be told, I think a lot of people use the legal aspects of business as an excuse to hold themselves back from actually going for their dreams. They let it be complicated and mysterious, even though it's not, and because it's "complicated and mysterious," it's "not their fault" they haven't started yet.

    You & I know that's bullshit. 💩

Equally though, there are people out there who are ready to go, but have a question they can't quite seem to figure out, and don't want to pay a $1,000/hour legal fee to get pointed in the right direction.

This podcast is for BOTH types of people: we dispel the myths of the legalities of business, I'm talking with a REAL business lawyer, and I ask all the questions I've ever had around legal stuff in business, all the questions I've heard from clients, AND all the questions I've heard from wanna-be entrepreneurs who like to use the legal stuff as a crutch. 😉

PLUS, I've got a checklist below of all. the. things. Jamie & I talked about in this episode, so you can use it as a go-to guide for getting your business off the ground, or for getting your legal ducks in a row if you've already started, but want things to be more "official."

After this podcast episode, you'll have all the information you need to get going… or know where to look to find it. And if you have any other questions, you can hit up Jamie, today's interview guest, at @hashtag_legal on Instagram, or via her website link below.

    What We Talked About
    • Jamie's background as a lawyer & why she's so passionate about what she does for solopreneurs and entrepreneurs, instead of practicing the corporate, commercial law she practiced at the start of her career.
    • The absolute basics of what you should do from a legal perspective to get started when all you have is an idea & no established business yet.
    • Why LLCs are such a good choice for most first-time business owners & other business models to be aware of.
      • Sole Proprietorships & Corporations
      • S-Corps as a tax status
    • Getting a partnership agreement set up by a lawyer to avoid a painful "business divorce."
    • Rules around product sales & packaging requirements.
    • Legal rules around websites, online marketing, and email marketing.
    • Intellectual property & how to protect it.
    • The difference between trademark & copyright.
      • Ideas can't be protected by copyright. It has to exist outside of your mind before you get a copyright on it.
      • Common law copyright rights vs. registering a copyright.
    • GDPR & what you need to know about email marketing.
    • Common law trademark rights.
    • What you need to know about contracts - either as someone being hired or someone doing the hiring.
    • Her advice to the Business Bitch community:
      • Be patient
      • Get really comfortable with failing. (And her own experience with this when she was getting started with Hashtag Legal.) I also share my own epic failure experience & the good that came out of it. Where to find her online.

    • Set up a partnership agreement with a lawyer if you have a business partner.
    • Staying on top of your annual reports.
    • If selling a physical product, make sure you're compliant with regulations. To find out what those regulations are, ask around for people in that niche who do things similar to you & find out where to get a list of regulations. Find out what your labeling requirements are. Start by Googling it, if nothing else.
    • Ask an accountant about sales tax.
    • Website to-do's:

    • Put an email opt-in on your website & don't just add people because you feel like it. Wait for them to opt-in.

  • Ep. 15: Start & Run a Successful Freelance Business - Eleanor Goold

This episode is for my lovely freelancers! (Or, really, ANYONE who runs a service-based business that serves other business.)

I'm talking to Eleanor Goold, who founded Kreativ Copywriting after careers in financial services and as a canine massage therapist. 🐕

We had SUCH a good conversation about getting clients as a freelancer, finding a niche that you really LOVE (and not one that you "should" love on paper), and why sometimes, it's best to just start out as what she calls a "hired pen" as you develop your business.

We also talked about her success in generating leads on LinkedIn, and why it's such a fantastic platform to market yourself and find clients without the competition of Instagram & Facebook.

After you listen to this episode, follow me on Instagram @businessbitchchelsea to tell me what you learned, what you liked, and what you'd love to hear in future episodes!

    What We Talk About:
    • Eleanor's business & All. The. Things. she has going on inside of it.

    • Why LinkedIn is the best for finding B2B clients.
    • Eleanor's process behind getting great leads on LinkedIn.
    • The things freelancers do online when they're desperate for clients that make us cringe. 😖
    • How we each found our niche within the world of copywriting.
      • BUT why you don't need a niche to start out.
    • Adding courses as a revenue stream to her business once she was well-established as a freelance writer.
    • How you can be a high-paid freelancer AND be accessible to all kinds of people at all different price points.
    • Why Eleanor puts some of her courses on Udemy to both make money & generate leads.
    • Why she doesn't do big course launches.

    • Balancing burn-out & motivation. Why she has to have three projects going on at once to stay really motivated.

  • Ep. 14: Self-Employed Health Insurance: Affordable Options - Mark Dunn

In this episode, I talk to Mark Dunn, who is the National Sales Manger of America's Benefits, LLC - a company specializing in alternative health insurance plans. (And who is also my health insurance broker.)

It's no secret that it's a massive challenge for self-employed people to easily find affordable health insurance they can actually use... but the good news is that there ARE options out there, you just have to know where to look for them. Which is why Mark was such a perfect guest for this interview.

He knows the health insurance laws inside & out, and is licensed to sell health insurance in most states. He also knows exactly how to get you coverage that costs a lot less than what you'd find on Healthcare.gov, and that'll be a lot more useful for you and your family should anyone get sick or be in an accident.

    What we talk about:
    • The four places you can go to get health insurance: The Affordable Care Act & the three other options.
      • Health Share Organizations
      • One, Two, & Three-Year Health Plans

    • How you can get a plan that's on average 1/2 the price of the marketplace.
    • Why I started seeing alternative health care options after turning 30, and what I found that cost less than half of the marketplace's cost & gave me much better care.
    • Explaining what Direct Primary Care is.
    • Why alternative health care options are so much cheaper & what to take into consideration with some of these plans.
    • What to do if you have pre-existing conditions.
    • The ACA mandate is no longer in place, so there's more freedom in what's "required" as far as health insurance.

    • The financial backup programs that are now available that weren't available a couple of years ago.
    • The importance of Medicare costs & how it plays into both traditional and alternative health insurance plans.
    • Why North Carolina is an INCREDIBLE state to live in for alternative health care options. (And why states in the northeast aren't so great.)
    • Why it's okay if you move states on an alternative health insurance plan, and what things to consider about plan renewal if & when you move.
      • And why you can keep your indemnity plan until you turn 65 no matter what.
    • Why traditional family plans can be a huge rip off when you only have one child. (Family plans typically charge for 2.2 children.)
    • Getting coverage for your child for $100 per month.

Today we're talking to Hyder Merryman, founder of Married to Cleaning, which is a home cleaning company in Anderson, Indiana. Hyder started cleaning homes as a side-gig to earn money for her wedding, but once she got a taste of the freedom self-employement offered her, she never looked back. She's three years into her business, and today she runs a full-fledged company with loyal customers and even a team of employees!

We also talked about her past as a student with a learning disability, and why entrepreneurship has been so empowering for her when she didn't exactly grow up thinking she could reach for the stars.

This was SUCH a good interview, and was even a proper two-sided conversation! She even asked me questions at some points! And we talked about a TON of great resources - all of which are linked below!

    What we talk about:
    • How the cost of a wedding spurred her into starting her business. How the idea of a cleaning business came to her while she was at her day job.
    • What it takes to keep going when business gets hard… even after you make the initial money you wanted to out of your side hustle.
    • Podcasts we love to listen to for kick-in-the-ass motivation to make our dreams happen.
    • Why she LOVES Mondays.
    • The loneliness of entrepreneurship & the importance of cultivating friends who also own businesses.
    • The importance of enjoying & rewarding yourself with the little things as you do the hard work to build a business.
    • What it's like when things feel like they're falling apart, and why that's okay.
    • The steps she took to grow her business to a team of people once she felt ready for it. How she learned to trust other people to do "her" job and hand the control over to other people. With baby steps.
    • Being successful without a college degree & with a learning disability.
    • Why good grades don't really matter & how valedictorians usually aren't the ones that "make it big" as far as success anyway.
    • Refusing to settle for laminate floors & her gutsy-ass, ballsy story of buying her gorgeous house when it wasn't even for sale.
    • Her goal of investing enough money to grow her business & get a website. Because she's "old school" and only uses social media. 😂
    • Why NEITHER of us use business cards.
    • Her advice to the Business Bitch community: There's a YouTube video on how to do EVERYTHING.
    • Not being afraid to ask for what you need & what you want.

  • Ep. 10: What It's Like to Work With Business Bitch, An Interview With One of My Clients - Walton Jones

Oh my gosh, I am so proud of this episode, AND of my client!!

In this episode, I talk to Walton Jones, who worked with me in August and September in my six-week 1:1 coaching package. He's a total expert in all things blockchain and cryptocurrency, but was having a hard time figuring out how to earn a living from this skillset before he hired me. Once we had our first discovery call together, I heard his passion for his work, saw a vision he could step into to achieve his dreams, and then guided him to that next level.

But rather than me telling you what I did, he tells you the whole story from his perspective, which is so cool and really special.

Here's a more specific breakdown of what we talk about in this episode:
    • What is blockchain in layman's terms? Why it's a trustworthy "person" that helps other people communicate.
    • Helping people understand blockchains & cryptocurrencies as a tool for social change, rather than putting sleazy buy-in invites out there using Bitcoin as a get rich scheme.
    • Setting up a website as a business, but then realizing that money doesn't just come in just because you're putting good content out there.
    • How he found me on a registry for conference attendees & started following me online before deciding to work with me.
    • What it was really like to coach with me for six weeks
    • How I helped him shift his strategy so he could make more money more quickly AND change the world on a bigger scale through his work. Two birds, one stone!
    • The bigger vision I saw for him & his mission after our initial discovery call, and how I helped guide him to achieve that vision.
    • His dream of being an expert speaker on a topic that isn't fully a "thing" yet.

Then, I asked him some questions about cryptocurrency & blockchain so "normal" people like me who don't fully understand it could get a better grasp on what it is, and why it's so good for the world. Here's what we went over in that section:
    • What makes cryptocurrency a more financially equitable system than the current financial system?
    • What's the difference between all the different cryptocurrencies?
    • The supply cap of Bitcoin: why there's only 21 million that will ever exist. - Why will no more Bitcoin be created after 2140?
    • Why Dodgecoin is a good currency to practice with.
    • What will happen to the value of Bitcoin when there aren't anymore being created?
    • What's the difference between cryptocurrency and "real" currency like Dollars, Pounds, and Euros—especially since they're all just based on perceived value anyway? And since most exchanges are all electronic? (For example, the US Dollar is no longer on the gold standard.) - 95% of dollars don't exist in paper form
    • How can business owners use blockchain or learn about it for the future?
    • Use-case examples for blockchain in business.
    • Medical records on blockchain & how it could help you out A TON.
