What

• noun [mass noun] the action of leading a group of people or an organization: something one does!
• different styles of leadership.
• Note the ACT of leadership

• the state or position of being a leader:
• the party prospered under his leadership
• Example: leadership Southgate. 

How

• Accountable- a leader has to be accountable. He/she must understand that he is to answer for the good and the bad of any situation.  with others. 
• Authentic - this is required to earn trust. This doesn’t mean that you know everything. The opposite actually. 
• Utilise the skills at hand - trust his subordinates to solve problems and make mistakes
• Example: leaders I’ve worked with

Knowledge

What

• Facts, information, and skills acquired through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject: a thirst for knowledge her considerable knowledge of antiques.
• Information Skills - the important things that are vital or useful for your job/ relationship
• Acquired - Journey of learning. Over time we gain information and skills from both
• Experience or education - formal education and training together with personal exchanges and collaboration
• Example: my knowledge has been acquired more through experience than education. 

How

• Collaboration - working with others. 
• Education Training- in order to reach your destination, you have to have some idea as to how to get there. 
• Self awareness - knowing what needs to be improved to strengthen your strengths . 
• Example: over my career, I’ve gained knowledge mainly through experience and learning through self-awareness. Listening and collaboration has also been vital for understanding and learning

• Personal - relates to an individual.

• Example: My career journey has not been an easy one

How

• Destination - there’s no point in a journey without a destination. 
• The Route - in order to reach your destination, you have to have some idea as to how to get there. 
• Determination - there has to be a will to reach the destination. An acceptance that it may not be easy.

This week we unravel the topic of  honesty. A very important part in life in general as well as career. Hope honest are you with yourself and those around you?

What
* The quality of being honest: they spoke with convincing honesty about their fears it was not, in all honesty, an auspicious debut.
* Being true. True to one self first and foremost (if you don’t believe you, then why should anyone else?)
* Having integrity → doing the right thing even when no one’s watching
* Sincerity → being genuine and authentic in how you express yourself
* Example: when something goes wrong. It requires honesty to properly establish facts 

How
* Self aware - understand how you tick as a person
* Feedback - Be open to receive feedback from friends and colleagues to help with the above
* Trust - not being afraid to  own up if something goes wrong.
* Example of honesty: being open with close friends. However the juxtaposition comes when we understand that often times people must be allowed to be honest. That means non judgemental interactions.

What

• The desired outcome of your endeavours.

• Required for any area of life regardless of work
• Example: goal is to work in a particular role therefore I tailored all of my efforts toward this outcome. Learned new things, developed certain networking relationships in order to profit 

How

• Vision of what your life or career will look like when achieved / not achieved
• A clear plan as to how it will be achieved
• Measurable steps S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound). 
• Review/adjust

This week we take a look at: Focus. The What and How thereof. 

What
* An act of concentrating interest or activity on something: our focus on the customer's requirements.
* Concentrating one’s efforts on a particular area. Could be anything:
    * Punctuality 
    * Communication 
    * Networking/exhibition
* Thus honing skills and specific experience
* Example - industry level focus (high level) or job focus (low level)
How
* Over time an area of focus may develop 
* A long standing interest
* What to focus on: 
    * strengths
    * Areas of interest
    * Weaknesses insofar as they inhibit a strength 
* Example: my work has focused on energy, specifically trading and risk management

On the 10th of March, I was contacted by the team at Jamaica FM and was asked to give an interview about career choices, why some go wrong and what can be done to rectify or change career decisions. 

Despite having less than two hours notice, I agreed because Jamaica is a country close to my heart for obvious reasons. 

Despite some nerves, the interview went reasonably well. So much so that there may even be a follow up!

In this episode , we’ll be talking a look at Empowerment. A very powerful state that will put your career or personal situation into overdrive. 

What
* Authority or power given to someone to do something: individuals are given empowerment to create their own dwellings.
* Essentially the freedom to express one’s talent in order to accomplish tasks. 
    * In addition in a the wider context of an entire job or project
* Example - at work being entrusted to make decisions. Importantly, being allowed to fail. 
* On a personal level, as parents, we should be encouraged to allow our children to undertake tasks. The development is about learning and they should be entrusted to do so eg doing shoelaces - let them!
How
* Trusting subordinates or lower-ranking colleagues to do work - building selfconfidence
* Allowing mistakes and Fuckupability
* Encouraging creativity. Creativity is the child of empowerment. Allowing others to develop ideas freely without undue or unwanted intervention. 
* Example - delegating - passing more tasks onto team members. Not dumping work on them but allowing them to take ownership of tasks and their job. 
 * I had a boss that told me once: Been after three years, you shouldn’t be here
