Evidence of the Night: Fox Hollow Farm & the Herb Baumeister Case. A new Hulu special, Return to Fox Hollow: New Victims, Darker Secrets, premiered today — a follow-up to the Emmy-nominated The Fox Hollow Murders: Playground of a Serial Killer. Herb Baumeister, a Westfield, Indiana thrift-store owner and married father of three, is believed to have killed at least 11 men — investigators say the true number could exceed 25. Roughly 10,000 charred bone fragments were recovered from his 18-acre property, and Baumeister died by suicide in Canada in 1996 before he could be arrested. We cover the ongoing DNA effort to identify additional victims and the open questions about accomplices and missing evidence.

Legal Minute: The Geofence Warrant Ruling (Chatrie v. United States). After a 2019 armed robbery at a Virginia credit union, police served Google with a geofence warrant demanding location data on every device within a roughly 150-meter radius of the bank — narrowing the list of devices down to Okello Chatrie. A federal judge agreed the warrant lacked particularity and probable cause but let the evidence in under the good-faith exception. On June 29, 2026, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3, with Justice Kagan writing for the majority, that accessing that location data is a Fourth Amendment search — you keep a reasonable expectation of privacy in your phone's location history, even when Google is holding it. The Court didn't ban geofence warrants outright; it sent the case back to the Fourth Circuit to decide whether this warrant met those requirements. In July, the ACLU published findings alleging Flock Safety — the license-plate-reader company from our Episode 1 South Carolina story — has repeatedly misrepresented its capabilities to city councils, police departments, and the public.

Case Update: Texas Cocaine Bust. On July 1, Border Patrol agents near Falfurrias, Texas stopped an 80-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife towing a trailer with a hidden compartment holding more than 345 pounds of cocaine. Both told DEA agents they knew narcotics were inside and expected $5,000–$10,000 to drive the trailer to Houston. They've been charged with possession with intent to distribute and waived their preliminary hearing.

Case Update: Two Lake Tragedies. In Kentucky, 19-year-old Marly Kinney disappeared June 24 while boating on Grayson Lake; her body was recovered four days later. The pontoon's captain was separately arrested for boating under the influence — as of now, that charge and her death are not officially connected. In Mississippi, 18-year-old Nolan Wells went missing July 4 on Horn Island; his body was found two days later. Investigators suspect drowning and don't currently believe foul play, though the case remains active. Indiana DNR is also stepping up enforcement of the federal "kill switch" boat lanyard requirement this summer.

Case Breakdown: Tarnished the Badge — The Jamey Noel Case. Former Clark County, Indiana sheriff Jamey Noel pleaded guilty to 27 of 31 felony counts — theft, official misconduct, tax evasion, money laundering, corrupt business influence, and obstruction of justice — after an Indiana State Police probe into his misuse of fire and EMS department funds. He was sentenced to 15 years with 3 suspended to probation, plus a $270,000 fine and more than $3.1 million in restitution. We explain how that sentence becomes roughly 9.5 years served with credit time — a distinction that gets lost in headlines.

Legal Minute: Flock Cameras & the Fourth Amendment. Two Flock Safety cameras were cut down in Pageland, South Carolina — the story that opens a Fourth Amendment rabbit hole tracing back to Katz v. United States (1967), the case that gave us the "reasonable expectation of privacy" standard. Lacey and Nic walk through Justice Harlan's two-part test — is there a subjective expectation of privacy, and does society recognize it as reasonable — and run automated license plate readers through it: how much privacy does a driver have on a public road, and does 30 days of aggregated location history change the answer? At least 30 cities and towns have canceled Flock contracts since 2025 amid the ongoing legal fight.

Case Update: Nancy Guthrie. Nancy Guthrie, mother of Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since January 2026. On July 2, a man from Hawthorne, California pleaded guilty in federal court in Arizona to two felony counts of harassment by telecommunications device after posing as a kidnapper and sending the Guthrie family ransom demands. His plea calls for five years of probation, with sentencing set for September. The FBI has confirmed it received multiple ransom notes in the case — some hoaxes, some still under review.

Case Update: Paul Pelosi. On Friday, July 3, Paul Pelosi, 86, struck a legally parked car in Yountville, Napa County, California, briefly stopped, then drove away. Deputies found his disabled vehicle about a quarter mile down the road; a breath test showed no alcohol involved. The Napa County Sheriff's Office referred the case to the DA's office for a possible misdemeanor hit-and-run charge under California Vehicle Code 20002 — a referral for review, not a confirmed filed charge. Pelosi has a prior 2022 misdemeanor DUI conviction from a separate incident. (Update: prosecutors have since filed formal charges, with a court appearance set for August 14.)

Evidence of the Night: Iowa's Longest-Unidentified Jane Doe. On April 11, 1975, a fisherman found the body of a young girl in the Mississippi River north of Clinton, Iowa — ruled a homicide, shot in the head, and unidentified for over fifty years. Forensic genetic genealogy has now given her a name: Cheryl Edwards, 15, of Waukegan, Illinois, approximately ten weeks pregnant at the time of her death. A team of volunteer genealogists traced her family from Louisiana to Wisconsin before confirming her identity through a San Diego birth record. She's been identified — her killer has not.
