The history of Marcus Aurelius is rich and lined with lessons learned and troubles overcome. He would lose his father at the age of three and be adopted by one of the most powerful men in Rome. He waged war, lost loved ones, owned slaves, and persecuted Christians. He would be betrayed, lied to, and immortalized. He quietly would right down his lessons learned and strive to wake up the next day and live a little better than the last. He left behind his meditations for us which have elevated him to a level of fame to surpass all the Roman emperors but Julius Caesar himself. Hope you enjoy the History of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.

During the peak of Rome's glory lived a stoic emperor who left a journal that became a blueprint on how to live a virtuous and good life. The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is an important pillar of classical education and classical literature. The "Philosopher King" would become synonymous with Marcus Aurelius as he would become one of the most famous Roman emperors in history. Epictetus is one of my favorite stoic philosophers. From his wit to his straightforwardness, I enjoy his works immensely.  From his humble beginnings as a slave just trying to survive to his influence on emperors and generals, he has earned his place in history. The death of Socrates set off the age of philosophy. It also set off the search for the soul. In the story of Phaedo we dive into Socrates' ideas on the existence of the soul before life begins and what happens to it after it ends. In the last minutes of Socrates's life after drinking the poisonous hemlock we watch as Socrates calmly accepts his fate and dies with courage and peace. His death is an important part of philosophy and is a sign of the times. We must not lose sight of what is true and virtuous and we have to instill reason back into society if we hope for it to function in a just way.  I hope you enjoy the story of Phaedo by Plato as we read through the Harvard Classics.

The trial and death of Socrates is a remarkable story about one man's decision to defy the mob of society and choose truth over unrighteousness. So many lessons can be pulled from the story such as sacrifice, justice, betrayal, and corruption. The simple act of telling the truth can make waves that can last for thousands of years.  The conversation he has with Crito is one of steadfast courage in the wake of an unjust government.  Where are the men like him today? God only knows.

The Trial of Socrates is a remarkable story about one man's decision to defy the mob of society and choose truth over unrighteousness. So many lessons can be pulled from the story such as sacrifice, justice, betrayal, and corruption. The simple act of telling the truth can make waves that can last for thousands of years.  Socrates was a veteran, a husband, and a father but we know him today as the founder of the Socratic method and one of if not the wisest philosophers to have ever lived.  Where are the men like him today? God only knows.

The Journal of John Woolman is a documented journey of a remarkable man. Although, like me, you probably have never heard of John Woolman his story I feel can resonate with us all. He is a devout Quaker hell-bent on living a life that is loyal to his religion and traditions and at the same time courageously willing to challenge the status quo. His journal makes up a writing style that is logical and pious. He does not deviate from his ideas once he judges them as good and moral. An abolitionist before it was mainstream and a man who truly walked in the teaching of Christ.

Benjamin Franklin is one of those individuals in history I could sit around a fire with, sipping a cold brew, and just listen to the tales and stories of his remarkable time in history. His wit, his energy, and his lessons have placed him on the shelves of history as a truly remarkable founding father.
