Happy first Friday of May! A lot of you might be evaluating your end-of-year goals and thinking you need to change them because you're not on track to hit them. Let me challenge you to shift that thinking and evaluate your process rather than changing your goal.
As a business owner, you create your plan and you are in control, but often times we don't know the steps to execute to carry out the plan. You might also be facing some doubt that is sneaking in and holding you back. Your job is to:
2. Create the process to get to the goal - when you don't hit your goal, something happened in the process that didn't support it (and that's when you reevaluate)
I use the example of potty training your kid. You know without a shadow of a doubt that your child will eventually be potty trained, even if it takes time and there are accidents along the way. If they have an accident you don't start to doubt that they will be potty trained, you change the process to support the end goal.
Let's work through a way you can implement this in your business:
1. Fold a piece of paper longwise
2. Write your goal at the top - this is your "Circumstance"
3. Next, write out all the actions it's going to take in order to reach your goal - this is a hypothesis
4. Give it a few days and flip the paper over and write your goal at the top again - write out your thoughts about it and how each thought makes you feel
5. Show up for 31 days of the month and follow through on the actions from the feeling of excitement
Remember, you need to show up for the whole month. The purpose of the goal is to create the process that works to get you there. You might need to tweak it along the way but eventually, you'll have a fail-proof process and you'll be looking for ways to increase your goal rather than decrease it.
