The Chaise Lounge Podcast

Today’s Chaise Lounge showcases Miami designer Darla Powell of Darla Powell Interiors. Powell is a former Miami cop of 19 years who decided to follow her childhood compulsion to redecorate into an interior design career in 2017.

Today on the Chaise Lounge, Nick talks with two guests, the co-founders of Pillar and Peacock Adrianne Bugg and Brandeis Short. 

Adrianne Bugg spent five years in finance before eventually joining up with Brandeis to start the firm. When she told her mother about it, it turns out she had saved her past sketch books for the day her daughter figured out the direction she needed.

Bugg’s direction dovetailed with Short’s. Brandeis Short majored in fine art and dance and needed to find a practical channel for those early career choices. 

So in 2011, they founded Pillar and Peacock together. Today, Pillar and Peacock is a small and thriving residential and commercial design and architecture firm.

Jonathan Berger tells Nick about his design journey from Pasadena, California to all over the world. Berger feeds his creativity by revisiting his love for antiques at fairs all over Europe and the U.S.

Today on the Chaise Lounge, Nick welcomes Karen B. Wolf, principal of Karen B. Wolf Interiors to the show. Wolf fell in love with art as a child but only found it as a career after years in marketing. Now she combines both skill sets in her business.  

Wolf started her career double majoring in marketing and fine arts. She remained interested in design but followed the marketing path beyond undergrad because there seemed like a greater and more stable demand for marketing. She worked in marketing for years, even managing a company’s QVC-handling arm. But eventually she went to Parsons School of Design at night to get certified in interior design so she could get back into more tactile arts. 

 She learned everything she needed and got started, founding Karen B. Wolf Interiors in 2009. Since then, Karen B. Wolf Interiors has become a small but thriving company with an eye on changing trends. 

Wolf believes that interior designers need to market their businesses by leading their marketing with a strong visual element. She says Instagram is more important for hooking clients than the website is because potential clients will filter through the Instagram to the website.

Welcome back to the Chaise Lounge. Today, Nick returns with Nancy Charbonneau, a Texas-based designer who runs Charbonneau Interiors, a boutique design firm that specializes in bespoke designs. 

Charbonneau started college for fashion design, but, when she was visiting home, her now-mother-in-law had hired a designer, and Charbonneau got to see what the interior design looks like, and she wanted to work in that situation, so she set herself on the path to where she is today. Designing interiors.

The next step for Charbonneau Interiors is bringing on a marketing director to take the lead on turning all the work the team does into attention and strengthing the brand.
