In this episode you’ll quickly see how fewer words, main points and slides can reduce your anxiety and improve your confidence. Meet Kristen--a sensory scientist who regularly presents testing and research findings. I'm teaching Kristen the basics in organizing a speech across three topical areas.
This episode jumps in on her 1:1 session, with Kristen's first attempt at my Box Talk technique --which she called "a dumpster fire!" Lol. Kristen wanted to organize her thoughts so she could improve her delivery, self-confidence and credibility. In under an hour, Box Talk and my stackable approach helped her narrow her ideas, work from fewer notes, and appear confident while presenting. Longterm, I would work with Kristen on organization, hedging techniques and controlling the conversation so won’t do or say too much! She already has an inviting personality and a great speaking voice. Narrowing her points so that she can trust what she already knows about the subject matter--versus overwhelming herself with data no one needs–will help her be more credible and confident.
Kristen’s laughter throughout this session is proof that representing your brand on- and off-camera can be painless! This is how public speaking and interview skills can support your professional goals.
Watch my Box Talk video on YouTube to see more examples of the technique in action, and you can read about both my Box Talk and ABC exercises here: https://www.marceiacork.com/0-to-60-confidence/

I sat down with candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates, District 23, Keenon James, for a candid discussion on long term unemployment, the looming #recession, and second-chance hiring for returning citizens--all very timely and relevant topics for my audience. We also discuss gun violence and gun awareness, which are a central part of his platform.
Keenon points us to some great programs and resources. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. In fact, there's more than one way to enjoy it--watch this interview and other select videos on my YouTube channel.
You can find out more about Keenon James and his campaign at keenonformaryland.com and across social profiles @keenonformaryland.

Like so many, John is a one foot in and one foot out kind of entrepreneur! Working in the banking industry by day, and building a following in the financial space with his spare time. He’s enthusiastic and jumps right into all of my exercises. What I love about John is that straight out the gate, he’s consistent and authentic. From my CPR approach to public speaking--giving life to your speaking opportunities with CPR--John captures the “R”! He’s incredibly relatable. He feels like the guy next door, which is very effective for the relatability factor and what’s known in social media marketing as the “like/know/trust” factor.
Longterm, John is the type of client who will want to focus on sound quality, fluidity and more vocal variety in his speaking voice and manuscript speaking. His voice is a bit monotone. We want to improve that, but not lose it--because that's the John brand!

#Entrepreneurship. Sometimes you choose it. Sometimes it happens to you while you’re chasing something else.
This episode format differs from the others. It includes several clipped highlights from a broader conversation I had with my friend and local entrepreneur, Nikita Floyd, owner of Green Forever Landscaping and Design, Inc. But there were so many nuggets and gems from our conversation I wanted to include it as a mini-episode.
Nikita's purpose led him to his passion–or maybe it was the other way around. His passion was acting. But his “little landscaping business”–a Prince George’s County Business of the Year–had already made him a millionaire by age 26. He’d make comedic YouTube videos in the early 2000s that got the attention of the Oprah Winfrey Network and NBC to develop shows! Those opportunities didn’t pan out, but that media presence unexpectedly grew his landscaping business even more. Landscaping won. Listen to his story here and on YouTube.

Listen in on Part 2 of Kennetta Calloway's 1:1 coaching session. Kennetta retired from the federal government then made a professional pivot. She started a nonprofit, Broken Chains, Inc., to provide vital resources, housing and even job readiness for returning citizens.
We revisit Kennetta in week four of her 4-week coaching package. I give Kennetta feedback on the pitch deck she’s developed as part of my program, and guidance on how to speak conversationally alongside her slides versus reading from them. At first the presentation lacks warmth and it is obvious she is reading data directly from the slides. I show her how to make a scripted speech/presentation sound more comfortable with my Underscored technique. By the end, you hear a much more authentic conversation, and the pride in her voice when she knows she’s nailed it! Use the links below to practice the Underscored technique on your own:

Kennetta Calloway retired from the federal government, and thought her next chapter would be one of travel in leisure. Instead, the release of a family member who’d been incarcerated gave her purpose for an entirely new career path–helping returning citizens avoid homelessness and recidivism by providing vital resources and transportation to assist their job hunt. She founded and leads a Washington D.C. nonprofit, Broken Chains, Inc.
In parts 1 and 2 of Kennetta’s 1:1 coaching sessions you’ll hear tremendous growth! In part 1 we join Kenetta’s very first session–week one of her 4-week coaching package. She’s just about to try my BoxTalk exercise for the first time. By her second run-through you’ll already hear a more structured speech, and a great pace because she isn’t rushing or rambling to fill the minute! Above everything, you’ll hear her sound more comfortable delivering it! Stay tuned for Part 2, where she’ll have progressed to applying this same structuring methodology to her pitch deck.
