Bekie first met Ryan at the Hug Me event in Rochester, where she came for a hug and ended up staying throughout the day. After hearing pieces of her story, Ryan knew there was so much more to talk about.

Bekie lives with two neurological and muscular conditions, small fiber peripheral neuropathy and a form of muscular dystrophy, with more testing still ahead. After years of balance issues, dropping things, unexplained pain, loss of sensation, falls and injuries, and having scary symptoms dismissed by multiple doctors, testing finally revealed significant nerve damage.

Today, her hands and legs are affected the most, along with her eyes, and her baseline can change from one day to the next. She also opens up about the mental health challenges she carries from childhood and how those become even more complicated while facing the loss of mobility.

Bekie knows that doing the things that bring her joy often comes with a physical price afterward. But as she says, most of the time, it’s worth it.
