Today's chapter shows us the strife between some of the families, Valerie of the House of Vale receives Isenwald's letter, and two men work behind the scenes to try to pull strings in favor of the betterment of the land. Will they be successful, or will greed and contempt win?
Quick overview of the central characters in the first chronicle. We have four jarls, the most powerful noblemen: Valerian of Vale is the richest and most influential. He has a brother, Konstans, a nephew, Konstantine (his heir), and a daughter, Valerie. Isenhart of Isarn is his rival. He has a famous brother, Athelstan, and two sons, Isenwald (his heir) and Eumund. Theodoric of Theodstan is another jarl, an accomplished schemer with Theodwyn as his sister. Raymond of Ingmond is the last jarl.
Another important nobleman is Elis, current dragonlord, meaning he is the de facto ruler of the realm since the king died. Beyond this, Athelstan has a squire, Brand, who is head of House Arnling, a destitute house, but descended from royalty. His only family is his sister, Arndis.
The King’s Quill, or simply Quill, is the royal librarian, but he is also the keeper of laws and the Adalthing, the assembly of noblemen. His position is therefore highly respected. He has an apprentice, Egil, who is friends with Kate, a kitchen girl. He has an acquaintance and partner-in-scheming, Godfrey, a wanderer, who has an enigmatic friend himself, a blind beggar named Ælfwine.
