Why are we here? Why did God leave us on this earth after He saved our souls? Though it is important to maintain good physical health outwardly, many do so while at the same time ignoring their spiritual health. Something all people share in common is we all know what it is like to be hungry. Every so many hours that pass by bring a new feeling of physical discomfort that can only be satisfied by eating food. Jesus understood this truth because he was fully human as he lived here on this earth. In our text we will discover that physical hunger is a real motivator that pushes us to action. Jesus wanted to use that illustration to remind us that spiritual hunger is not only a great motivator but also an indicator of our genuine commitment to the things of God. He drives home the truth that a person who truly hungers and thirsts for righteousness will be equipped to extend mercy to others and reap the benefit of being granted mercy by God.

When you study the Beatitudes it quickly becomes obvious that they are paradoxical in nature. Simply stated they present information that at face value seem to be contradictory. No where is that more evident than in Matthew 5:4 when the Lord says: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." One of the biggest mistakes that people often make when reading and studying the first 12 verses of Matthew 5 it they interpret the information in the physical light instead of the spiritual light.
