Most of your struggles are a struggle with shame, especially if you're a man. Most of the ways we try to deal with shame lead to more struggles. Feeling alone, inadequate and beat up, we numb and escape through substances or behaviors, and try to prove ourselves through work or relationships. It doesn't work. It never will. This shame convinces us to run, hide, and cover up, perpetuating a cycle that worsens the challenges we face. The struggle is compounded by a world that often mislabels these difficulties as weakness, rather than recognizing them as a universal human experience we all face. The only solution (that I know of) to dealing with shame's lies and power, is by accepting and turning to God's grace and stepping into the light by living honestly and openly. Jesus, the gospel, the good news, makes this possible.
