The church of Christ on McDermott Road

Ezra was a scribe and a priest, who helped the Jewish people resettle in Jerusalem after the return from Babylonian exile. He taught the people the Torah and hoped that their return to Jerusalem would be a fresh start for God’s people, ushering in a time of peace, prosperity, and faithfulness to God. Unfortunately, the returned exiles continued to struggle with sin and soon Ezra was frustrated. We ought not be surprised when we—or the people we love—continue to struggle, even after a life-changing event. We need to love them and help them take their next step by faith.

You might say Noah got a fresh start. He and his family were free from the torment of the evil world they left behind. However, nearly as soon as they got off the ark, Noah’s family corrupted the new world with sin of their own. They brought the sin with them into the new world and once again, things were broken. January is a whole new year; but like it or not, we have brought our struggles into this new year. But when we inevitably mess up, we don’t need a whole new year, we just need to take the next step by faith. (Scripture: Genesis 9:8-17)

As we wrap up our journey through John (and as we wrap up another year), let’s remember that the Son of Man gives us food that endures to eternal life. Because the Son of Man now reigns in heaven on our behalf and he has given us everything we need for life, we should seek that which comes from him rather than the food that perishes. How would 2020 look different if we really devoted ourselves to seeking the bread that the Son of Man gives?

When we think about Jesus being born in Bethlehem and that news being announced to wise men and shepherds, why do we think that is Good News? Why does Jesus’ birth mean “peace and good tidings on earth”? Why do angels rejoice at this news? It’s Good News because humanity has a King who is partnered together with God to bring justice and peace. It’s Good News for all who give him their allegiance. (Scripture: John 5:25-29)

Jesus compares the exaltation of the Son of Man to the bronze serpent from the book of Numbers. Jesus believed that when he was lifted up on the cross, he would draw humanity to himself and they would be healed and would receive the gift of eternal life. What does it mean to be a people who believe in the Son of Man? How has his coming and his sacrifice changed our lives? (Scripture: John 3:14-16)

We explore Daniel’s vision, the horrible beasts, the Ancient of Days, and the Son of Man. What does it mean for Jesus to fulfill this ancient vision? What does it mean for Jesus to be the Son of Man? And, on a practical level, what does it mean for us to be living under the reign of the Son of Man? What has changed now that he has taken his throne in heaven? These are some of the thoughts we will explore. (Scripture: Daniel 7:13-14)
