In this episode, I dive into a deeply layered conversation at the intersection of race, religion, and culture in American life.
1. Is Empathy sin?
We begin with a theological controversy that’s been gaining traction in some evangelical circles: Is empathy a sin?Yes, you read that right. I unpack the roots of this claim, what it reveals about shifting moral frameworks, and how it intersects with broader cultural and racial dynamics.
2. A Moment of Grief
I also take time to reflect on the emotional toll of yet another school shooting. The grief, the anger, the numbness—it’s all there. And it’s exhausting. These moments demand more than thoughts and prayers; they demand accountability and change.
3. Cultural Notes
I share my disappointment in Tasha Cobbs Leonard’s recent performance at the Kennedy Center. While I respect her artistry, the timing and context of that appearance felt painfully out of sync with the moment we’re living in.
🎵 Music for the Soul
To close, I offer a recommendation that’s been helping me process and breathe:Kirby’s new album “Miss Black America.”

This week’s episode dives into a whirlwind of headlines that expose the tensions between faith, politics, and cultural identity in America:
1a. Church Announcements: James Dobson Dies at 89
In this podcast first, I start with a church announcement— the passing of Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family. I discuss the problematic legacy he leaves behind.
1b. Byron Donalds and the Cracker Barrel Conversion
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) sparked online debate after tweeting that he “gave his life to Christ” in a Cracker Barrel parking lot, while criticizing the restaurant’s “woke rebrand.” I discuss the ridiculous conflation going on here.
2. Texas Court Blocks Ten Commandments Law
I provide an update on the 10 Commands law in Texas. A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against Texas Senate Bill 10, which would have required public schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom.
3. Nick Fuentes’ Racist Rhetoric on Africa
Far-right commentator Nick Fuentes made headlines again with a deeply offensive claim that Africa had “no culture, language, or two-story buildings” before colonization. We unpack the historical inaccuracies and racist underpinnings of his statement, and highlight the rich legacy of African civilizations that challenge such narratives.

In this week’s episode, we unpack three seismic cultural and political events shaking the American landscape:
1. Doug Wilson’s CNN Interview & the Rise of Christian Nationalism
I look at Pastor Douglas Wilson of Christ Church and his controversial CNN interview where he openly advocated for a Christian theocracy in the U.S., which included erasing voting rights for women.
2. Trump’s Federal Takeover of the D.C. Police
Trump has taken over the DC police. How can he do this and what does this mean? I spend some time unpacking this very dangerous situation
3. Proselytizing at the The Kennedy Center?
Who is managing the Kennedy Center’s instagram page and why is it set to host the red-carpet premiere of The Revival Generation, a documentary by the Christian Broadcasting Network?
📚Finally, this week I make a book recommendation - Faces at the Bottom of the Well by Derrick Bell.

In this episode of The Church, The Court, and The Culture, I have a special guests. Together we explore the following topics:
* Why are prominent Black pastors photographed praying over NYC Mayor Eric Adams? Is this a genuine act of spiritual support—or a calculated political move? We unpack the symbolism, the optics, and the implications for faith leaders in public life.
* As we mark the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, our guest expert joins us to discuss its legacy and the alarming threats to its survival. What does this mean for Black voters and the future of democracy?
Finally, We close with a curated list of must-read books that illuminate the themes of justice, faith, and resistance. Whether you're a scholar, activist, or curious listener, these titles will deepen your understanding of the cultural currents shaping our world.

What does the recent porn allegations against Oklahoma’s State Superintendent, Ryan Walters mean about the broader issue in the church? This week I discuss it.
Then unpack what the Trump administration’s new memo on religious expression in federal workplaces means. The Office of Personnel Management has issued guidance allowing federal employees to proselytize at work—as long as it’s not deemed harassing. This includes inviting coworkers to church, discussing religious beliefs during breaks, and even praying over patients in federal hospitals
I unpack the implications for religious freedom, workplace boundaries, and the erosion of church-state separation.
Finally, I return to sharing music as I continue to process the Norman Gyamfi interview. I spotlight new releases from gospel powerhouses Maranda Curtis and Fred Hammond. Their music reminds us of the enduring role of faith in Black communities—both as resistance and refuge.

What does it mean when gospel music, voting rights, and white separatism collide in the same news cycle? Listen to this week’s episode for the answer.
We begin with a deep dive into the recent episode of The Isaac Carree Show, where gospel artist Isaac Carree sat down with Norman Gyamfi—CEO of Insignia Assets and a key figure behind Maverick City Music. I discuss how his interview, cloaked in business acumen and “kingdom principles,” veers into anti-Blackness and relates to the movie Sinners.
Next, I turn to the Supreme Court’s recent stay in Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians v. Howe. The case challenges whether private citizens can sue under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act via 42 U.S.C. § 1983.
Finally, we examine the disturbing rise of the “Return to the Land” movement in the Ozarks of Arkansas. Founded by Eric Orwoll, this whites-only community spans 160 acres and explicitly bans Black, Jewish, LGBTQ+, and non-European residents.

Has Americanism—or its more accurately White nationalism—become a religion unto itself, distinct from Christianity? In this episode I briefly discuss this question and others raised by its implication
I also delve into the racist roots of opposition to the Department of Education, uncovering how resistance to federal oversight in education has often been tied to efforts to preserve racial hierarchies and regional control.
Finally, I ask a question: Can you be a Christian and a member of a fraternity or sorority?

This week, we dive into a whirlwind of headlines and highlights. One pastor claims that Christians are morally bound to support the Trump administration. Meanwhile, the IRS has shifted its stance, allowing churches to endorse political candidates. And according to Pastor Greg Locke, the Starbucks logo is a demon. Join me for a recap of the latest developments on The Church, the Court, and the Culture.

Why did the National Baptist Convention ink a $300,000 deal with Target during a national boycott? In this episode, I unpack the layers—historical context, what does this mean for the boycott and what can we do. I also share a quick update on Mahmoud v. Taylor, a key religious liberty case, and reflect (with some righteous frustration) on the dissonance of praying in tongues while endorsing injustice in plain English.

Welcome to the first episode of The Church, the Court, and the Culture! Each week, I’ll briefly unpack what’s happening in the church, spotlight key faith-related court cases, and explore how it all connects to the broader culture.
In this debut episode, I’m diving into a controversial figure: Paula White. From her preaching style to her political ties, I’m asking the question—is she cosplaying as a Black pastor? Let’s talk about cultural appropriation, performative ministry, and what that means for the black community.
