Witches were persecuted for centuries, all based on superstition, paranoia, revenge, and greed. And so when a Puritan family is exiled to live in the woods, it's understandable they'd start pointing fingers when things go awry. But what else lurks in the more dangerous terrain of all: their minds?
Guilt, lust, pride, greed, grief and sloth all come into play as five characters enter the new world, and only one leaves.

We all know how a monster acts, and often we know what a monster looks like, but as any horror fan will tell you, the scariest monster is the one you find within. Christ Washington may not have found a monster inside of himself, but he certainly found the horror that his mind is capable of when manipulated. But what can the Sunken Place teach us about ourselves and what lives just beyond our conscious mind?

There's no denying that Michael Myers, the grandfather of the slasher genre, is one of the scariest horror movie monsters of the modern era. And it's not because of any supernatural powers, or especially creepy visuals -- it's actually the opposite. Myers disturbs us because we don't get any information from him. Hiding his face behind a mask, never speaking a word, he moves soundlessly and emotionlessly through our lives, carrying out his murderous mission.
So what can we say about Myers and the Real? Well, a lot more than you'd think.

All these answers, and more, on this episode of the Cine-Analyst!

But a dark cloud falls over this perfect picture when the Creeds move to rural Maine and come face-to-face with a haunted burial ground which will turn their entire world upside down...if they're not six feet under it first.

Being a teenager is hard. Being a unpopular teenager is even harder. Being an unpopular teenager who is abused by your overly religious mother can be utterly overwhelming. So some might find it understandable why Carrie White, with her newly developed psychic powers, took out an entire high school gym's worth of kids.
How Carrie got these powers is not important – what she does with them is. More importantly how it puts her closer to the state of the Real by giving her what she wants – for people to stop laughing at her. From victim to villain, Carrie represents the person we want to be...and the person we're scared we are.

What makes us scared? It's a question that writers, directors, and yes, psychoanalysts have been asking for a long time. Horror is not as easy as just throwing in some well-timed jump scares or having some frightening costuming and makeup.
No, horror is more connected to who we are, and who we hope we're not. In this episode we explore horror and our theorist for this season, a name that already strike dread in the hearts of academics everywhere. Join us on this journey where we shed some light on the darkest of stories and chase the boogeymen out from under the bed.
