  • Senate inquiry saves CBA branches in 320 towns; ACP says nationalise NAB! - MEDIA RELEASE 11/07/2023
    The Senate inquiry into bank closures in regional Australia has had another victory, with Australia’s biggest bank, the Commonwealth Bank, announcing a three-year moratorium on regional branch closures.
    This announcement saves banking services for the next three years in up to 320 towns, depending on how CBA defines “regional”.
    Those towns can thank the Senate inquiry and Senator Gerard Rennick who fought for its establishment.
    They can also thank the NSW Shire of Junee and its Mayor Neil Smith and CEO James Davis, who fought tirelessly to save Junee’s CBA branch, the last bank in town.
    Junee’s fight was instrumental in attracting national attention to the issue of branch closures, which enabled Senator Rennick to win support for the inquiry.
    Nationalise NAB?
    By contrast to CBA and the other banks, National Australia Bank is showing it is Australia’s baddest bank, by arrogantly ignoring the inquiry and continuing to close branches in droves.
    NAB was the only one of the Big Four to outright refuse the request of the Senate committee to pause branch closures pending the outcome of the inquiry.
    It has also misled the Senate committee in its testimony, and is lying to its customers about numbers of branch visits.
    NAB closed three regional branches in Victoria on 6 July: Inverloch, Jeparit, and Kyneton.
    It was already planning to close its Queanbeyan in NSW and Boonah in Qld branches on 20 July, and Biggenden, Qld and Dunsborough, WA on 27 July.
    NAB has now announced 9 more regional branch closures, mostly in NSW:
    Wellington and Warren on 22 August; Gilgandra and Lake Cargelligo on 24 August; Gosford on 31 August; Gundagai on 26 September; as well as Temora, Tatura and Kilmore in Victoria on 28 September.
    These are all branches which were on the list of 64 branches where NAB reduced business hours earlier in the year, which the Australian Citizens Party warned in a 19 April release was a sure indication they were in the firing line to be closed.
    That means 48 more branches can also expect to be closed soon.
    Independent journalist Dale Webster has exposed NAB in her news service "The Regional" for misleading the Senate inquiry in the Sale hearing about its NAB agency in Maffra, Victoria.
    On 3 July The Regional also exposed NAB for deliberately deceiving the customers of branches it is closing, by claiming in Fact Sheets that branch visits have fallen dramatically.
    However, the figures in the Fact Sheets only include over-the-counter banking transactions, and not the many other visits customers make for other reasons, including “to sort out I.T. issues, provide proof-of-identity documents, remove or add names to accounts, appointments for term deposit changes, to speak to staff about loans, meetings with managers or any other activity that is not a deposit or withdrawal”.
    ACP Research Director Robert Barwick today called on the Senate Committee and the Parliament to take serious action against NAB for its appalling and deceptive behaviour, to force an immediate pause on branch closures.
    Quote: “The Senate Committee has demonstrated that by standing up to banks, it can force them to back down, as Westpac and CBA have”.
    “What will it take to stop NAB’s wave of destruction?
    “Maybe the solution is to nationalise NAB? After all, the ACP and many others see the long-term solution as a government bank, like a post office bank, to force the private banks to compete, and ‘national’ actually means government-owned—it’s already in NAB’s name.
    “Should National Australia Bank become Australia’s national bank, to actually serve customers rather than gouge them, save cash and branches, and introduce real banking competition?”

  • How to save Glenroy Post Office, and all Post Offices! - MEDIA RELEASE 27/06/2023
    The Albanese government is to blame for Australia Post closing Glenroy Post Office and dozens of others, because it is ignoring the solution that would fund all postal services.
    Australia Post’s decision to close Glenroy Post Office has sparked outrage in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, with local political leaders posting angry objections on Facebook.
    Local state MLC Evan Mulholland posted: “I’m bitterly disappointed at the decision by Australia Post to close its Glenroy Post Office. So many people in our community rely on this post office for basic services like the paying of bills. When local banks have closed (there's been a few) they make the excuse that locals can go to their local post office. I'm calling on Australia Post to reverse their decision and for the Federal Labor Government to intervene to stop it closing.”
    The local federal Labor MP Peter Khalil posted: “The decision to close the Glenroy Post Office has come as a shock to me and the residents of Glenroy, and we will advocate to reverse this decision….”
    The state Labor Member for Broadmeadows Kathleen Matthews-Ward posted: “I’m so furious about Australia Post’s decision to close the Glenroy Post Office. Communities need access to services, especially communities like ours with higher than average people with a disability and people over 80 as well as lower than average internet connection, income and car ownership. It is such a bad decision, I’ll be doing everything I can to see it reversed.”
    Merri-bek Mayor Angelica Panopoulos posted in a video: “Hi, we’ve just had word that the Glenroy Post Office is set to close. This is shocking news for so many of us who know the Post Office to be a vital community asset.”
    There is a clear solution to the problem of maintaining essential postal services—establishing a national Post Office People’s Bank.
    Postal services and banking services are both essential services.
    The banks are closing branches all over Australia, denying communities essential banking services, and (except for ANZ) they are also telling the customers they are abandoning to go to the Post Office to do their banking.
    But with Australia Post also closing Post Offices, these communities are being hit with a double whammy.
    The solution is a dedicated public postal bank, instead of just the private banks using Bank@Post as an agency.
    Postal banks are successful all over the world: By using existing Post Office networks they provide banking services cheaply and efficiently, while the revenue from banking helps to fund postal services—there’s no need to close Post Offices.
    A national Post Office people’s bank would also provide real competition to the Big Four banks—it’s the solution Australia desperately needs.
    Consider those points within the context of the banking problems that have beset Australia recently:
    • CBA’s severely disruptive national network outage;
    • Customers denied cash by ANZ and other banks;
    • The acute crisis of customers being fleeced by sophisticated online scams;
    • Banks “de-banking” competitors and customers they don’t like;
    • Profit-hungry banks gouging customers by immediately raising interest rates on loans but not deposits;
    • Banks like NAB defying the Senate inquiry and continuing to close branches.
    A national Post Office People’s Bank is the solution to all these problems.
    It would be a face-to-face refuge from digital dangers; it would guarantee cash access and payments; it wouldn’t discriminate by de-banking any customers; and it would put service before profit.
    Glenroy and Australia need this solution now.

  • Anna Bligh’s bank branch closure protocol is a swifty, not a solution - MEDIA RELEASE 27/06/2023
    The Australian Citizens Party, which campaigned for the current Senate inquiry into bank closures in regional Australia, today slammed Anna Bligh and the Australian Banking Association’s new branch closure protocol.
    The ABA and the banks are pulling a swifty, trying to pass off their branch closure protocol as the solution to branch closures, when the only thing it even attempts to solve is their bad PR.
    First of all, the branch closure protocol is not new—the ABA has had a branch closure protocol for 20 years, following a recommendation of an earlier parliamentary inquiry.
    Did the previous version of the protocol stop banks from closing branches? Of course not—the banks adopt these instruments of self-regulation to pull the wool over the politicians’ eyes.
    The new version of the ABA’s protocol is the same. It doesn’t stop branch closures; it simply requires banks to ‘communicate’ the closures better.
    This was one of the pathetic recommendations of the Regional Banking Taskforce. Whenever ‘better communication’ is a recommendation from a government inquiry, it’s simply a politician’s cop-out.
    The Regional Banking Taskforce was the Coalition’s pre-election stunt to make it appear that they were addressing this crisis of mass bank closures, but they stacked the taskforce—8 of the 11 members represented banks.
    No wonder it gave the banks the green light to accelerate their branch closures!
    The current Senate inquiry is proving that Anna Bligh’s ABA was gaslighting the community about the reasons for branch closures, and that the banks are not justified in closing branches at all.
    Anna Bligh is all over Australia running the banks’ line that customers are ‘overwhelmingly jumping into the opportunity of digital banking’, BUT the Senate hearings and an examination of the ABA’s and banks’ statistics tell a very different story.
    The Finance Sector Union testified on behalf of bank staff at the hearing in Sale in Victoria in March that the banks are putting their staff under intense pressure to sign up all of their customers to online banking.
    The staff report they aren’t allowed to mark on the customers’ record if they decline, so the customers who don't wish to bank online get asked repeatedly—actually harassed!
    And NAB’s figures prove that the banks are only interested in meeting targets, not whether their customers are comfortable with their banking options.
    NAB’s fact sheets for closed branches show they close the branch when around 90 per cent of customers are ‘registered’ to bank online, even though, by NAB’s own figures, only a quarter of them are regular online users.
    Meanwhile, Anna Bligh’s ABA has started producing meaningless statistics that show only 1 per cent of bank ‘interactions’ are now at branches.
    But interactions include literally every time someone opens a banking app, even just checking their balance multiple times a day.
    It reflects an explosion in technology-driven interactions, not a real decline in branch visits.
    But it’s a stat for Anna Bligh, the banks and politicians to wave around to justify the banks’ agenda of forcing, not following, their customers into what is, especially for elderly customers, the risky world of digital banking, by taking away the reliable alternatives of branches, ATMs and cash.
    The truth is coming out in the Senate inquiry, the Senate inquiry has proven that bank branches are profitable, and has forced Westpac to reverse the closures of eight branches.
    The Senators are also talking about the need for a public bank to guarantee banking services and force the Big Four to compete.

  • Scandal tainting Brittany Higgins compensation highlights Labor’s betrayal of Sterling First victims
    The questions now being asked about Labor Finance Minister Katy Gallagher’s speedy compensation payment to Brittany Higgins, within months of taking office, highlight Labor’s betrayal of the elderly victims of the Sterling First rent-for-life scandal, who remain uncompensated and facing eviction and homelessness.
    The Australian Citizens Party is calling on the Albanese government to act on Labor’s pre-election rhetoric and compensate the Sterling First victims for the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s failure to police the Sterling Income Trust Ponzi scheme.
    In 2015 serial Ponzi scheme offenders launched the Sterling First rent-for-life scheme targeting retirees looking to downsize, but ASIC ignored the directors’ connections to past financial failures.
    In 2015-2017 ASIC ignored multiple complaints about Sterling First, marking them NFA—No Further Action—despite knowing the scheme was falsely advertised and targeted vulnerable elderly consumers.
    In 2017 ASIC ignored a complaint about Sterling First from a Western Australian government department for six months, before finally launching an investigation.
    In 2019 Sterling First collapsed, ruining around 130 elderly victims who had paid their rent in advance for the rest of their lives. Renowned consumer advocate, Denise Brailey, began working with the Sterling First victims to achieve an inquiry and compensation.
    In 2021 the ACP got involved in the campaign for justice for the Sterling First victims, and in August 2021 mobilised people all over Australia to call and email Senators to request an inquiry into the Sterling First scandal and ASIC’s failures.
    In October 2021, Labor Party Senators Louise Pratt and Deb O’Neil took the lead in establishing a Senate inquiry, which held powerful hearings that confirmed ASIC received multiple warnings on Sterling First, but failed to act.
    In February 2022 the Senate inquiry released its final report, which slated ASIC’s performance, “including its under-assessment of the gravity of the risks, the timeliness of its response, and its failure to act proactively”. One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts included in the report the following clear recommendation for compensation:
    “All factors considered, including ASIC’s regulatory negligence, and the advanced age and vulnerability of the Sterling and Silverlink tenant victims who are being evicted, the Commonwealth Government, which is responsible for ASIC and its regulatory philosophy, should immediately compensate the 130 victims for the full $18.554 million they lost, plus interest and expenses.”
    In April 2022, Labor’s Shadow Financial Services Minister (now Minister) Stephen Jones met with the Sterling First victims in Mandurah, WA during the election campaign, promising that they would be included in the Compensation Scheme of Last Resort (CSLR) if Labor won the election. However, Jones rejected their calls for immediate compensation under the Finance Minister’s powers, claiming no party could commit to that.
    In September 2022, following Labor’s election, Jones broke his promise to the Sterling First victims, leaving them out of his CSLR legislation.
    In December 2022, Labor Finance Minister Katy Gallagher’s department paid up to $3 million in compensation to Brittany Higgins, whose partner David Sharaz is close to Gallagher.
    The Labor Party was all over the Sterling First tenants before the election, but since taking office they have turned their backs on them.
    They were just using the victims to win the election; victims complain Labor Senators aren’t even responding to their communications anymore.
    Stephen Jones broke his promise to include them in the CSLR, and he lied that they couldn’t be compensated under the powers of the Finance Minister—Katy Gallagher’s compensation of Brittany Higgin proves they could be.
    The elderly Sterling victims are being evicted and dying—they deserve compensation now!”
