Word Recovery: “Precious”

Throughout the two letters penned by Peter in the New Testament, the word “precious” is used seven times and an eighth time a related word is used. It is interesting that the rough, impulsive, hot-tempered Peter should be the one to use these words. We use the word to describe small children or puppies. We also use the word “precious” to describe the gestures of people who perhaps offer something simple from a place of meekness and humility. It is what we would consider a “woman’s word” or “pink-speech.” You won’t find a lot of guys walking around using it to describe cars, sports moments or even their new girlfriend. The only way a guy would perhaps use the word is in the context of something rare as in “precious metals or artifacts.” The word “precious” in these verses means more than just something highly valued or prized. It carries the idea of deep love and affection with it. This series of messages will be taken from first and second Peter and cover the subjects that Peter attaches to this word. They are: “a tested faith” “the Blood of Jesus” “the cornerstone that is Jesus” “simple faith” “the promises of God” and “inward attitudes that are prized by God.” All of these subjects are important in their significance to Christian doctrine, but in using the word “precious” in relationship to them the Holy Spirit was seeking to draw these doctrines out of dry lectures and creeds into the warmth and focus of our affection. This series will endeavor to foster a deeper love for Jesus and affection for the treasures that attend our life in Him.

The word glory is unique in Scripture and needs several English words to define the meanings that rise from both the Greek and Hebrew along with the multiple ways that the word is applied and used. At its core the word glory points to something or someone that is beautiful, compelling, perfect, magnificent, worthy of honor, full of dignity and splendor. The basis for the Hebrew word is: weighty, which leans into the meanings of having great value and worth and in evoking awe from those looking at it (Him) that provides a contrast between the ordinariness of ourselves from His “otherness.” He is beyond and above us in every conceivable way.

The temptation that we face in seeking to look into the glory of Jesus is to make Him more like us, focusing on His humanity and approachability. His incarnation (God in human flesh) was necessary, but His humanity in no way defines Him. His glory (perfect, beautiful, majestic, otherness) surrounds and clothes Him as He does His work as Savior, Healer, Deliverer, Shepherd, Priest and King. This series of messages will celebrate the glory of Jesus as found in the full spectrum of that glory. We will behold His glory in His acts of power and healing, the restoration of personalities and families, the grace to stand in times of difficulty and suffering, the provision He brings, the wisdom He offers and the mercy of His forgiveness and freeing love.
